WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

A Kinks Reunion?

Posted about 1 year ago
The Kinks will reunite for a special tour this year, reports "NME":NM.Lead singer and guitarist Ray Davies has been hinting at a reunion for some time, and the Daily Mail is reporting that the original line-up intend to reform for a 2008 tour.Ray Davies' brother and guitarist Dave Davies suffered a stroke in 2004 and bassist Pete Quaife has kidney troubles, but Ray said that they are both willing and interested in the reunion."I spoke to Quaife about a month ago and he dearly wants to make another record with me," said Davies. "I think Dave's getting better and Mick's still playing. It would be great to get back together just to see what musical ideas we had and what would happen."Davies added that as a solo artist he has missed being part of a band. He said, "You miss the interactive stuff. You get it to a degree with other musicians but probably not with the same passion."Ray Davies added: "My brother has been sick for the past year, but I'm going to get together with him and we're going to see if the music is still there. There's got to be new music. We can't just play the old hits."For more info and updates, check out Dave Davies' official site:http://www.davedavies.com/[NM]http://www.nme.com/news/nme/33414

  4. Bartleby says I heard Ray Davies' casually mentioning it on Radio 2 a while back but didn't believe in it. Now, that's something to look forward to.

  6. anna log says the kinks were my fave band in the 60s.
i love ray davies and think he is a genius... so much so that when i worked at vh1, i started a whole series based on ray's one man show (the storyteller spawned vh1 storytellers)....

however.... sadly.... ray's new compositions.... don't measure up to his older material.... they should stick with a greatest hits show.... it worked for the who....

  7. NeilNathan says i don't want to crimp their style, but i would certainly route for the greatest hits show, all of 'em in a row over a three night stint, to be specific!

  8. mullytron says Hell yeah, I'd go. If they insist on writing new tunes, I'll even listen to them, why not.

  9. Sturgell says I'd love to see 'em. Even if they play new songs, you know they have to get around to their old stuff sooner or later

  10. vannatta says Dude - I'd love to see em' too - and you know that they'd be kickin' the faves, with a Police sized ticket, most likely hitting the casinos... sweet.

  11. victoryrose187 says Wow, I'd be there in a heartbeat. I put them on today for the first time in about a year, (mostly due to a broken record player) but it brought back memories.

  13. TylerDurden says great to hear they all have a high level of enthuiasm about jamming with each other and even spit-balling new ideas, I'm sure they all will bring cool stuff to the table after the time apart.

  14. contrabandwidth says I'd take this reunion over Zeppelin anyday. I'm just continually surprised by Davies lyrical imagery. Fingers crossing!

  15. MooSickLover says No. They can just play the old hits. They don't have to make any new music. They've contributed far more great tunes than most bands could ever hope to create.

  16. fairportfan says The very first concert i ever attended was Zappa in '72. Then i did Zappa again a year or two later (with Dr Hook opening). And then, in February '75, i went to the third Real Rock COncert of my life - the Kinks, toruiong both "Preservation" and "Soap Opera" (with the full multimedia show, girlk singers/dancers and horns)... with Elvin Bishop (?) opening. After that, i only ever missed one Atlanta Kinks gig, right up till their last US tour in '92. (Where the opening band, a local group called "The Ottoman EMpire", featured a fiddler who later went to Afghanistan as a Wall Street Journal reporter and got killed...) I don't care how broke i am - if the Kinks reform and tour in the US, if they come within 500 miles of Atlanta, i'm there. (I once drove to Alexandria, VA for a Fairport show...)

  18. Konkrypton says Geez, I didn't know Dave had a stroke. I hope Ray's not hoping for too much after something like that. It sounds like he could be in denial, but if it works, I'm all for it! "Father Chrismas, give us your money!"

  19. fairportfan says I've said for years that i want my ashes scattered from Waterloo Bridge at sunset... I heard that Dave's stroke came as he was leaving from doing a BBC segment; minor, but for a guitarist, anything that affects dexterity. However, consider this pic of Fairport fiddler *Ric Sanders*, taken at the post-Cropredy barbecue in 1992:

Ric put his hand through a plate-glass window less than a month before the festival; *Chris Leslie* (who had sat in on fiddle prior to the Interregnum and is now a regular member more-or-less replacing Maart as multi-instrumentalist - or *was* last i heard, this is Fairport, after all...) had two weeks to learn the repertoire to fill in... It's a little hard to see - Ric has a cast on the wrist and lower part of the hand, covering, i assume, some fancy stitchery and bandages. Stiff wires run forward from the plaster in line with the fingers, and little hangman's nooses hang down from the wires, looping the fingers at the last knuckle, allowing him to use the hand for Important Things like pints, but to not flex the fingers too far and cause damage. (That's *Richard Thompson* in the background, BTW, wearing a blue cap and carrying the at-that-time new *Jack Thompson* on his back...)

  22. Flaneur says I'm 100% for new material... One of my favorite Kinks songs, while not exactly recent, (but recent in Kinks chronology,) is 1996's Animal, (not to be confused with Animal Farm.) It's one of two new tracks on the To The Bone Live album. The song is gorgeous, playful, Kinksy perfection. If they had 'it' in 1996 they've still got it. I'll bet there's some juice in these boys yet!
