Bono/U2 In Hot Water Amidst Tax Avoidance Scandal

Posted almost 3 years ago

Protesters in Ireland rallied outside of the Department of Finance crying fowl against U2's decision to situate their tax affairs in the Netherlands, reports the Irish Times. The move would grant the Irish rockers an avoidance of paying harsher taxes on their royalties in their homeland.

Organizing the event the Debt and Development Coalition Ireland (DDCI) which campaigns on issues related to the developing world. The coalition contains such organizations as, Trócaire, Oxfam and various Catholic missionary orders.

"Bono has championed the call for increases in aid to impoverished countries, yet in his personal life he is engaged in tax avoidance issues and it is tax avoidance that is undermining the possibility of developing countries fighting their way out of poverty," said Nessa ní Chasaíde co-organizer of protest.

Chasaíde stated the protest at the department of Finance outlines how U2's tax avoidance deprives the Irish taxation revenue money which could be spent on development aid.

"The practice of being able to move your finances around easily and without high levels of transparency is extremely problematic for developing countries. The kind of practice that U2 is engaging in is part of that problem," she explained.

Geezus, wtf are U2 & Bono thinking? Obviously getting really bad tax advice. As much as I love them, this is so not cool. . . .

It's all about context.  He might just be in mid sneeze and he accidentally grabbed that girl as he was lunging forward.

Of course, that's a sweet family moment there.

I guess we'll have to wait a day or 2 to see what the effect of this news has on No Line On The Horizon. Will fans ignore and/or forgive?

OH if only he turned into EVIL BONO.  He'd make twice as much money and become even more popular.  Works for wrestling and soap operas.

Memo to avandguard - Bono is Irish and not part of the UK. There are probably other Irish tax exiles as well - maybe Liam Neeson?

This was a news story over a year ago. Have U2 done it again?

Would the photo be part of last weeks earth shattering news story that Bono's daughters think he's boring?

    Jonh,

it's a recent story. It appears those wacky U2 boys are at it again.

Must be all that LiveNation money they took. At least Paul McCartney and David Frost and other Brits had the sense to stick it in the Bahamas before it got to the UK. You never hear about them avoiding tax.
