The Scandalous She-Wolf

Posted over 4 years ago
Another one today. This is Jessie Mae Hemphill, a blues guitarist and singer in the delta tradition. I guess she's had a bit of a resurgence lately in light of some influential followers. Her grandfather even recorded with the one and only Alan Lomax. Associations aside though, Hemphill plays the hell out of this song. It sound to me like she's playing slide guitar with a machete (or at least a butcher's knife!). Her voice is low down and dirty, more than suitable for the lyrics she's slurring through. This is blues the way it should be. Raw, rough, and raw again. The real deal.

  6. debi says Great music - and love hearing old bluesy female artists. I started listening to Bonnie Raitt many years ago - and then began listening to those who influenced her. Give a listen to this one - Big Mama Thornton w. Muddy Waters ~lAQvDoRAfZM.mp3~
