"Hey! I was just thinking it's a beautiful night!

Okay, so it's the first big snow (big meaning not a measly 15 minutes of flurries in the middle of the afternoon) in the grand old state of Maryland and as I watched the snow yesterday I couldn't help but think of my all time favorite snow songs... Not only was I in serious mix tape mood from reading The Perks of Being a Wallflower... c'mon "One Winter" anyone? And as I watched some kids have an intense karate infused snowball fight I couldn't help but love winter... In my super secret fantasies where I'm the stunning-but-doesn't-know-it leading lady, love always blooms in the snow. I pull off winter well in my dreams rosy cheeks instead of a perpetually runny nose (even though I also hope that my constant cold is cute to some people) and the snow halos instead of frizzes out my hair... oh well.... I guess this is a weird time, both incredibly romantic and full of potential and also the biggest let down with the post Christmas blues and the dread of upcoming Valentines Day, the snow is in that sad melting stage right now and its just miserable to be outside...Soundtrack for the the "Snow Scene"1. "Modern Man's Hustle" Atmosphere Is is a wonder that this is my all time favorite love song, it currently holds the top place in my "25 Most Played" on Itunes with a total of 229 times, at least, because this has been on two different computers before this one... but anyway I've found myself talking to my imaginary boyfriend while walking home from work while listening to this one and it makes me miss home oh-so terribly and it just works so well in the winter because it makes you want to cuddle underneaths the blankets and never get out of bed2. "Secret Splendor" Buck 65 The bells just remind me of snow falling and that adorable moment when you look into someone's eyes and sigh inside3. "Baby, It's Cold Outside" Zooey Deschanel and Leon Redbone The ultimate kitchy 50's Christmas weirdly sexual song... nothing creepy just cute innuendo with amazing vocals by Ms. Deschanel4. "Viva La White Girl" Gym Class Heroes I know this is about a different kind of snow but theres something so sexy about it that just works well as a brief energizer in the middle of one of those lazy days5. "Anticipation" Blonde Redhead I first heard this in August and I've wanted to have a first kiss to this song for a fairly long time. The minute Kazu begins you just want that brief, beautifully tense moment to be broken. I dont know really6. "Firestarter" Sneaker Pimps I've realized that the last couple are based on sound rather than actual content, but the beautiful music and contrasting lyrics work well with the feeling of the season... as cliched as that sounds7. "Gatekeeper" Feist I actually just heard this song today but I think it works I don't know it's more melancholy, I'm just pulling this commentary out of my ass right now8. "River" Joni Mitchell I originally heard this song on my own after I bought the Ally McBeal Christmas soundtrack in 8th Grade when I had a big crush on Robert Downey Jr. and he sang this... beautiful lyrics and both versions are amazing. Right now, though, Joni Mitchell just works that much better...

  2. ix3johnbender says "One Winter" is such a good mix. I love listening to it during the winter... then again, I love listening to it all the time. :) We just got some snow in NJ, too. The first "real" snow of the year, aka there was actually enough to cover some stuff. I can't believe it's taken this long. That's global warming for ya. Anyway, I was responding to your comment on my post about colleges. I'm so glad to find someone who goes to St. John's! Honestly, it's the first college I ever expressed any kind of interest in; its letters managed to stand out among the hundreds of other college ads I was getting in the mail and actually convinced me to open their brochure up and see what they were about. To put it simply, I (having no other concept of what other schools were like and what I wanted to do with my life) was convinced that I wanted to go to St. John's. The alternative approach to learning and the commentary of the students and alumni really got me hooked; I wanted to try to learn differently and walk away someone who could say that I truly had a better understanding of life and the world that I live in. However, my teachers and "mentors" told me that St. John's wasn't "good" enough for me and that I should look for somewhere "better". Essentially my questions are as follows: -Why did you choose to go to St. John's? -Is it everything you expected? Why or why not? -How does it compare to other schools that you applied (or considered applying) to and schools that your friends go to? -Is it really as profound and life-altering as it sounds? If so, is it outrageous to say that the same kind of transformative education can be found at other schools or is it a truly unique experience? -What is the student body like, taking into consideration the unusually small size? -How's campus/off-campus life? Is there "stuff" to do in the nearby area or is life largely campus-based? I could easily go on, but I feel no need to. I'm pretty sure you get the idea that I really just want to know how you feel about the school in general. You don't have to get back to me at any time soon, but if you're bored (or just really enjoy talking about your school) I would really appreciate your commentary. Thanks already, and enjoy the snow... and the good wintry music! :)
