Favorite Guitarists

Posted about 5 years ago
Geetings Moggers. I have been thinking about my favorite guitarists for a few weeks now. Why? As I embark on a new musical chapter in my life (the band with MOG's Kristiana, and Junior), I think about being the chief guitarist in a band for the first time. I have been in bands before, and have been playing guitar for 20+ years, and now I think about my playing, and how my sound has been shaped so deeply by other guitarist. And I think about how I want to sound, and how I would like to incorporate certain sounds into my playing (tonality, cadence, etc). Will I side with Greg Ginn's snarling abandon, or Steve Albini's machine shop pierce? Maybe Hendrix's volume, or Thurston Moore's 'drumstick under string' perfection? Maybe Jack White's brooding simplicity, or Tony Iommi's thunder? Maybe Frank Black's rhythm, or Johnny Ramone's stamina?I love to think about music. I want to hear any anecdotes, queries, thoughts about guitarists! Inspire me to re-visit others!Sorry about the early Cat Power post, but I had to share it with someone else! So beautiful. Kristiana - I will not make Fredericton this weekend, but definatley Easter Weekend. Are we going to get together with Junior, or just practice/write some riffs? Lemme know...I blacked out once while waiting in line to see Scarce at the Halifax Pop Explosion. I apparently did not know there was a limit on drinking. When my eyes re-opened, everyone was looking down at me. That's a weird feeling. My friend Rob Pinnock took me to someone's house (where he was staying), and we watched Blue Velvet on Laserdisc. Those laserdiscs were like as big as frickin record albums! Other guitarists/guitar bands I'm thinking about:The Edge, Daniel Lanois, Fugazi, J Mascis, Kevin Shields, Flipper, Johnny Marr, Butthole Surfers, the Reid boys (Jesus & Mary Chain, Beat Happening, Billy Zoom, Dead Kennedys, John Lee Hooker, Eddie Van Halen, Norman Westberg (god-like!), Lee Renaldo, Pete Townsend, Drive Like Jehu...Who else?C'mon, inspire me, Later,Steve-oI stuck a Swans track on the end here. Let the suffering begin..hehe. Oh, and here's a cool picture of Kazu from Blonde Redhead. New Blonde Redhead album April 10th, according to my sources. Dream on...

  1. scotfree says Regardless of the Fripps, Pages, Chiltons, Becks, Edges, Lofgrens, Mayers, Cooders, Whites and Walshes that run through my head when this question comes up...I always come back to the tree Micks - Ralphs, Ronson, and Jones(Clash of course)

  2. Jonh Ingham says You seem to have a whole university of six-string razor sharpeners there....Scot's choices are impeccable (and English!) - But I'll throw two other thoughts into the ring. Hendrix 'In The West' is a live album from late 68. There's a version of Red House that's 8 min or so of perfection - every note played, the tone, the level of attack, the distortion, the phrasing...it's a whole guitar course. It's inspirational and I don't even play guitar. You mention Billy Zoom - he who channelled Gene Vincent and rockabilly into Punk. (and had a great stage stance too.) Go find the first Gene Vincent album, with Cliff Gallup on it. (The Greatest Hits comps have em all.) The songs are barely 2 minutes long and still have 2 and 3 guitar solos! Gallup is just amazing - blinding fast runs and triplets with phenomenal feel and excitement. This is where Beck and Page learned to play, A few years ago Beck did a tribute album to these tracks and said that anyone can do triplets, it's what comes after that's the hard bit. He confessed he had trouble playing the solos and still expressed awe. Gallup left before the first Vincent records came out and never played anything remotely close ever again. Good luck in channelling whatever you go for through your fingers and into our hearts.
