Tuesdays And Thursdays Are Now Yoko Kanno Days

Posted almost 5 years ago
There aren't many artists that I'd really consider myself a fanboy for, but one exception is Japanese composer Yoko Kanno. I became a fan of her work after hearing the music in the anime series Cowboy Bebop and Escaflowne. I think the reason why I like her work so much is because she has a lot of range and is willing to try new things. She's tackled pop, jazz, rock, electronica, classical, and more and even if it sometimes sounds a bit derivative, it's usually fun to listen to. Yoko Kanno is not really all that known in America apart from anime circles and that's a shame. Although she is best known for her anime work, she has composed scores for live-action TV shows, movies, and video games as well. So, in the spirit of the themed days that I see here on MOG (Funky Fridays, for example), I have decided to share a Yoko Kanno song I like here every Tuesday and Thursday. Before I share the first song of Yoko Kanno Days (or Kanno Days as I'll call them from now on), here are some links to check out:The Yoko Kanno Project: Great english site with info on the composer. The Yoko Kanno Database: Another good english site although it hasn't been updated in a while. The best part about this site is its forum. The Yoko Kanno Webhilia: Although this site is in French, it has the most up-to-date and detailed Yoko Kanno discography I've ever seen. Now, the first song I'll share is one that you might have heard before. It's “Tank!,” the opening theme song from Cowboy Bebop. This song was performed by Kanno and The Seatbelts, a group brought together to do the music for the show. Check in on Thursday for another Kanno-composed opening theme.
