Oh not this again...

I heard the two new songs the Microphones...er Phil Elvrum...er Mount Eerie...er make up your mind Phil...the new songs the Microphones put out. One is called "Don't Smoke," the other is called "Get Off the Internet." I had enough of Mr. Elvrum's "philosophy" when he put on the Mt. Eerie mask and released No Flashlight; you know, the record where he told the listener that he was basically better for living sans electricity or something. Well, the two new Microphones tracks are yet another step in the wrong direction. Not only is the production value significantly worse than that of Mount Eerie, the brilliant Microphones album, but once again, it's Phil Elvrum's moral/philisophical high horse which is the important part of the songs. The lyrics, which I suppose are meant to show the new found frankness of a once subtle songwriter, are just more childish sneers and half-assed witticisms. Phil went from soundscape engineer genius boy to Thoreau want-to-be. But when he made the switch, he forgot that if he's going to be as blunt as he is being now, he better have something interesting to say.
