Been foolin' with this thing. The player above seems wrong. To hear the entire album, click on "share" and then click on the "download" button. That will take you to DivShare where you can see the whole player and start it up. Sheesh!

BASK IN LO-FI GLORY, OLD FOLKIES!

This old Everest album was extremely influential on my musical development. I listened to this many times during my teen years. I took my guitar and harmonica to the stage and performed several of these songs. Not surprisingly, "Take a Whiff On Me was a favorite for group singing in my hippy cohort. We supposed it's more properly a Woody Guthrie album with Cisco and Sonny Terry. From the liner notes it seemed a toss-up, though Woody's voice seems to dominate. Sonny's harmonica is a religious experience, I think. Listen to "Sourwood Mountain" & "Old Time Religion".

I thought it was cool that instead of "John Hardy" they sang "Johnny Hard". "Bad Lee Brown" a Woody Guthrie song also known as "Bad Lee Brown Cocaine Blues" (Not Leroy) is pretty catchy too. "I'll be here (prison) for the rest of my life. And all I done was kill my wife."

One of my favorites was "Golden Vanity". It had a story easy to recall and sing, so I naturally sang it first. It also piqued my curiosity. It's a British ballad that goes way back. Apparently a version of the older ballad "The Sweet Trinity", apparently about Sir Walter Raleigh. ">http://www.contemplator.com/sea/vanity.html The words and the tune are much simpler than the old one and shorter. Just where the Lowland Sea was or why they called it that is up in the air. Probably off Holland, because that is a low land and other verses mention Netherlands. Anyway, the change to Lone and Lonesome sea is remarkable. I also like how the kid bored NINE holes in her side and the captain shot THREE shots. But in the "Sweet Trinity" it was THREE holes (and no shots). Both are significant numbers. Here's a good little article. ">http://www.lizlyle.lofgrens.org/RmOlSngs/RTOS-GoldenVanity.html At some point the enemy is a Turkish Galleon. But Spanish makes sense to me b/c that's who was fighting with the British. Elizabeth I was trying to preserve the nation and the Church of England and the Spanish would have restored Catholicism by installing Elizabeth's half sister Mary Queen of Scots. If Mary were to become queen, King Philip II of Spain, Mary's ex hubby, would inherit the throne of England upon her death. Of course, we know Liz nipped that in the bud by executing Mary. But also, the Spanish sent the famous Armada in 1588 against England. At that time, Holland and Belgium comprised the "Spanish Netherlands". If Spain had conquered England they would be able to use the English Channel to maintain sea lanes to it's terretory and to crush the Protestant underground in Holland. (Raleigh had no part in that, though.) I had no idea of all that neat stuff when I got this record, of course.
