Sharon Jones & Dap Kings - Montreaux

"Got A Thing On My Mind"

I'll admit I was taken in when I first heard this. First, it sounds vintage. And it's funk like practically no one blows today. It was actually recorded in 2001 and released on a limited issue LP. Then, after gaining acclaim from DJs and critics, it was more generally released. Aside from the strong, punchy performances, they got this sound by shunning digital recording and more modern mixing techniques. I was also immediately struck by how much this reminded me of funky music from Africa in the seventies. The Daptones (formerly associated with the Sugarman 3, the Mighty Imperials, Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra) started out as the Soul Providers in the mid-1990s to reignite that late 1960s and 1970s funk sound. Sharon Jones was a back-up singer on one of their tracks. They liked her singing so much they brought her up front. When they went to the new Daptone label and renamed themselves the Dap-Kings, they gave her top billing, and the rest is funk history.

"The Dap Dip"

This album knocks me right out. It's hard to chose any particular cut.

Compare Afro Baby, by Stephen Osita Amaechi & His Afro-Rhythm-Skies and Fogo Fogo by Fela Kuti & The Africa 70.

There's also an album by the same musicians back in their Desco label days, when they made overt afro/funk/beat moves as The Daktaris..absolutely love, love, love Sharon Jones.

Your Daktari's post is far out, man.  That name was mentioned in an article I read.  But I didn't follow it up.  Too bad we can't hear the audio, now.  I'm sure to seek this out.  I get a silly smile when I think that all of this was going on!  Thanks for the info, chief.

By the way: Check out the Daptone label sampler "This Is Daptone" for free at Amazon.com right now!
