Sunday Under the Covers with The Stranglers

Posted over 2 years ago

A Bachrach/David cover by this British pub-rock > new wave band. I wish the vocals were better, but their extended instrumental jam shreds. Has a sort of psych sound to me. Notice how "broken in two" isn't enough. This guy's got to be "broken in pieces". On second thought, I do hand it to him. The liner notes, here, quote an unknown pundit as saying, "They're too old to be punks, too outragious not to be." Now that i think of it, they belong in Anna's recent post about Who's going to put the rock back in indie rock. They once were arrested and imprisoned in Nice, France for inciting a university riot. I'd like to hear that story. Maybe Jonh has the scoop on that.

never thought I'd hear this song covered quite like this!

re-awakens some memories - My Mum used to cover this tune back in the day, though in a more traditional sense.

A worthy SUTC post - and you are right  - nice instrumentation

Oooh, when I saw the title of this post I was hoping it would be this cut. One of the most brilliantly reconceived covers ever. Reminds me of the Animals on a particularly pure batch of amphetamines. And I would beg to differ with you - the vocals aren't "good" but they fit the song like the proverbial glove.

This is one recording I'll always remember where i was and who I was with when I first heard it.

Inrumford: That must be a sweet memory.  I'm glad to occasion it.

Granted, Ivy.  The more I listen, the more I gotta hand it to him.  He honestly deals with the pain.

Sometime after the moment long ago when I told myself that I was definitely going to comment about how good this recording was, and now, life got in the way and turned me into a negligent person.  As I grovel back here, please accept my praise for this Stranglers nugget and the post in general.
