MUSIC SIGNPOSTS ON THE WEB'S LONELY ROAD

Artist:
Track: Apotheosis

A friend invited me to hear Jeff Schmidt (above), Michael Manring, Jean Baudin and Dave Grossman, none of whom I've ever heard of, perform at "Solo Bass Night" this Friday at Freight & Salvage in Berkeley. I was not enthusiastic until I checked out this clip from the club's website, which seems to me to put Schmidt in the league of Victor Wooten and Arne Livingston (the latter played for Living Daylights).

wowee-zowie Spike, incredible. I would love to see that concert.

Michael Manring played with Michael Hedges and Alex de Grassi, and he was kind of like the house bassist for Windham Hill records when they started. Don't let that scare you away - when WH started they put out some incredible music, before they became the nation's source for aural wallpaper. I believe he played with the WH group Nightnoise too.

There are a couple of Grossmans I think, so I'm not sure if he's the one I think. One is a jazz sessionist who plays with one of the smaller NYC symphonies, the Philharmonic maybe.

The only one I don't know at all is Baudin. Please post a review after.

Isn't it. It reminds me of the acoustic guitar player Adrian Legg, especially his CD "Waiting for the Dancer."

That's great to hear. I know almost nothing about bass playing, and haven't heard Jaco or Clarke. I have question: is there a name for that style of playing bass? He sounds like he uses all ten fingers with the utmost control and with the most carefully thought-out speed patterns. Do you play that way?

pretty cool, he’s left handed & plays that bass as if it was a guitar. My fave bass player has always been jean jacques burnel from the stranglers.

Great, isn't it? About the higher notes, I'm guessing maybe he flipped a switch or pushed a button or pedal somewhere. Maybe RGM knows.

well, I seem to recall there were harmonics going on at some point in there...is that what you're referring to by "high notes"? I've always been a big fan of the harmonics. (also known as "overtones" or "partial tones")

He's also using a pitch shifter, octover & flange toward the end. & I can play like that when called for, I'm looking into getting into uprite right now. I'll send him an e-mail about the post...here's what I mean by Jaco\Clarke the 2 greats!... Again he's a great Bassist!

RGM, those two videos are great. I assume the second guy is Stanley Clarke.

My internet hookup allows me to watch these guys at maybe two or three frames a second, while their fingers are moving at hyperspeed, so it's hard to tell exactly what they're doing. Cody B asked about high notes, and Kristiana mentioned "harmonics." Now it looks to me like Schmidt is doing harmonics (in addition to the pitch shifters, etc. that you mentioned). (Harmonics are what you get when you lightly pluck a string with one hand while barely touching it with the other hand at a point that corresponds to one half, one third, or one fourth of the string's suspended length.)

Well harmonics or overtones can be achived when you touch, pick, strum ect. the string lighty. There are also falses harmanics that I been using like crazy lately, it's taken from a classical guitar teq. thang. here's somemore info from wiki... :)

Oh and yes that was Jaco Pastorius above And Sanley Clarke below strummimg School Days...

Great solo by John Billings, of whom I've never heard. Whole different style from Wooten et al, Hendrixian even. How was your lesson?

Great, the drummer from Beauticide studied with the drummer from his old band at the time from the Atomic Punks. He asked me why I wanted lessons and if I new a certain Wooten lick, I knew of it and how to kinda do it. But it wasn't what he was looking for, I told him I was looking for someone to help me clean up my playing and fine tune it. I took only one or two really didn't have the time or money after all, but I did learn a lot. He taught me his way of slapping I had my way, so I incorporated some of his style to mine. I pops with my middle finger, he pops I guess it would be more standard with his index. I was taught that way plus less of a streach, I do both now. I do a lot of thumb stuff and I have developed my own pick tecq. on bass & guitar. I don't do much bass pick stuff cause ...well I just don't like it LOL. But when I have I got bored and developed my own style.
