Recently several Moggers (Sturgell 2/27/08 http://mog.com/Sturgell/blog_post/146943 and someone else I can’t remember) have had posts about a Mother Jones piece (http://motherjones.com/news/featurex/2008/03/torture-playlist.html) titled “The Torture Playlist,” about rock, hip-hop and other musical recordings used by the U.S. military on prisoners “to induce sleep deprivation, prolong capture shock, disorient detainees during interrogations—and also drown out screams.” I thought of three recordings to add to the list:
First is Chet Atkins playing “Blackjack,” an instrumental composed by John Loudermilk, who also wrote the song “Tobacco Road” among many others. This is from Atkins’ 1963 album The Guitar Genius.
I chose not to include the Carpenters’ “We’ve Only Just Begun” (1970).
Next is Nino Tempo & April Stevens singing “I’m Confessin' That I Love You” from 1964.

Bloody defeatocrats.
To induce sleep deprivation, I'd be playing the prisoners - I'm sorry; terrorists - "N.Y. Scum" by Psychic TV; to prolong capture shock, I'd say probably "La Isla Bonita" by Madonna; to disorient them, I think I'd go with The Residents' cover of "Satisfaction." Drowning out screams (Good Lord; did they really say that?) is tricky, because it suggests you'd have to hear it, too... I suppose I'd have to go with "Fish Fry" by Big Black. But can't we just waterboard them all, anyway?
Oh; and I admire John Loudermilk greatly, even if I'm compelled to admit that wasn't his finest hour by a very long shot...

Thanks, in particular for the Son House ad and track. That picture of Nino and April supports my pet theory. Women are gorgeous, men are mostly hideous - and never more so than now. I think that only alcohol has kept the human race propagating. If women stop drinking, the race will die off.

Heavens, but that Nino Tempo/April Stevens track is excruciating. I would confess to crimes I don't even understand to stop that one playing....

I'm guilty; I confess. I'm a............nevermind.

Great Post Spike..That Gamelan fusion piece Ivy posted the other day could open a lot of minds and mouths I think.
I definitely think MOG could come up with a much.much better list than our armed forces. I think it should be called Spike's Death Mix..

zarpex, dermahrk, ivylander & deadmandeadman, I'm lucky to have found four commentators who each has his own gallows sense of humor.
When I click "Comments" at the end of my post, it hides the last part of the post. That's a first.

Ahh..Nino & April. http://www.ninoandapril.com/
They did 1 song that was tolerable. (sorta)
"Deep Purple"
In 1961, Nino had an appearance in "Breakfast At Tiffany's." when asked how well he knew Audrey Hepburn Nino said, "She told me she woke up every night screaming my name."

Cody B, you're right, the possibilities are endless. There's no shortage of torturous music, even on Mog.
Hammerogod, thanks for the Nino and April website address. I'm looking forward to exploring it. People here seem to be weighing in against them, so I may have to post something in their defense soon. The good thing about offering items for a torture list is that they can be musically good or bad, either is fine. Your Nino quote endears me to him, even though I've been told recently that he's hideous.

It was all fun and games until I read the rest of the post...which made the post that much better! I wish I could like it again.
Did Carolyn make an public exit?
My Trusted MOGs
Ivylander alerted me December 13 of her unannounced disappearance from Mog. We felt a real loss.

I'll say..both Carolyn's disappearance and 1/2 of your post were weird and unfortunate.
My Trusted MOGs
By unfortunate, I trust that you're referring to CheneyBush's moral leadership (& WWII).
My Trusted MOGs
Those items you mention were unfortunate, too, but hiding 1/2 of your post and Carolyn gone, whoa..that is really bad.
