Mable John, superb Stax singer and Raelette

I'll stay out of the way here and let you listen, to two 1967 Stax songs, "Same Time, Same Place," and "Left Over Love," both with slow tempo triplets played by keyboardist Booker T. Jones or Isaac Hayes, guitar by Steve Cropper and drums by Al Jackson Jr., and in between those songs an uptempo 1970 Tangerine release, "Bad Water" by the Raelettes, with her singing lead and bandleader Ray Charles's voice audible in the background. All of these were released as singles, but not reissued on albums until decades later.

Love Her! I also didn't realize, like my fave 2009 discovery Stu Gardner, that she was another artist who recorded for Motown and Stax (now that's only a semi-rarity to me) She cut for Motown before her Raelettes gig and the Stax sides..I guess Mr. Gordy hadn't finished with his Motown female vocalist mold and the formula yet..he was close though. It's hard to think of her as a Motown gal..1960
Mabel John- Who Wouldn't Love A Man Like That
Cody, what a find. I like how perceptive your take on it is. Gordy was close enough, though if I were to put myself in his shoes as producer in 1960, it would be hard to figure out exactly how to improve it with then-current ideas, though it does need something.
Mable John, who is apparently still active in charity work at the age of 79, is of course the older sister of Little Willie John. It is reported that she performed on some of his early King sides as "Little Willie John and his Girlfriend (!)", thus making her probably unique in recording for King, Motown and Stax.
Here she is in 1969 performing a song written by Steve Cropper and Homer Banks - "Shouldn't I Love Him"
she was the first female to be signed to the Tamla label of Motown nice one haven't listened to her in a while.
thanks. Great
Baudolino, so she was Little Willie John's sister? Wow, two amazing voices. Maybe their parents could really sing as well. It'd be good to know which early King sides she performed on; I think I have all his LP's. Too bad she isn't more famous. Thank you for sharing "Shouldn't I Love Him" with us; it sounds great to these ears.
cpetetersonart3 and deadmandeadman, glad you like these!
The great Mabel John!
Another incredible song of hers:
"Your Good Thing"
(If I knew how to attach it here I would)
Rayu110, good choice! I'm glad to find a fellow fan of hers.
