morning music

Posted over 2 years ago

I know, I know. I haven't kept up with your amazing posts. Our son got married, and other stuff. Anyway, here's some relaxing background music for Saturday morning. If someone intrudes into your space while you're listening to it, you can say, "Hold it; let me turn off this noise," but they'll know it's that sort of music that's performed in fancy venues where the audience is a sea of blueish hair. Don't worry, your intruder will now think you're more intelligent and cultured than you actually are. What you have to cope with here are two versions of the Andante of J.S. Bach's Italian Concerto in F (BWV 971) for solo piano, published in 1735. First is a 1938 recording by Artur Schnabel (1882-1951)

and then a 1959 recording by Glenn Gould (1932-1982). Notice Gould's stacatto left hand at the very beginning. If you listen carefully, you can hear him quietly humming.

I can't locate the verbage I came across recently online saying that this piece was like a jazz improvisation only in that the accompaniment followed a set chord progression and the melody didn't repeat itself, or words to that effect. Anyway, this is just an excuse to inflict on you a path to "the sublime."

...Spike!  If i want culture I'll get a petrie dish.  Seriously fine music here.   7;10 A.M.   I'm looking out the window at the frost that has yet to melt in the cold sun.........

    ..........What an apt soundtrack, thanks.

deadmandeadan, if the dish is in the kitchen, then it's a counter culture.  Your 7:10 AM scene sounds perfect for this piece.

inrumford, that's reminiscent of a quote I've mentioned elsewhere a while back.  “Music rots when it gets too far from the dance. Poetry atrophies when it gets too far from music.” ---Ezra Pound. ABC of Reading, 1934, p.61.

Oatmeal, thanks.  Genre-wise, I'm trying to get far, but not too far.

Once upon a time there was a music magazine called "Stereo Review." (Formerly "Hi-Fi & Stereo Review.") I recall a very funny cartoon showing an audiophile installing a "Glenn Gould Hum Filter" to his system.

I chuckle, but wonder if the filter would remove too much tannin, volatile acidity, nose, palate and finish.

your son got married and other stuff? congratulations are in order, and we silently mourn your absence.

thanks, Spike, that was so peaceful. i feel like i am swimming in that sea of blueish hair. i think i'm familiar with Artur Schnabel although vaguely. and i never know any song title because it's also that sort of music. (:

poebegone, thank you for the congratulations.  Silently mourning my absence is way cooler than letting my merely lurking disappoint you.  Why didn't I think of swimming in the sea of blue?  Doh!  Let me guess: your father had an Artur Schnabel record?  I'd remember the song's tile more easily if it were "And Daunting."

even more strangely, i think it was my mother, who got it from a family friend. thankfully, i am too old for today's "emo" bands made up of kids who assign overly long titles to their songs. (8
