Their 1952 version of "Smoke Rings" is one of my favorites of theirs. Those are her voices and his guitars.

Les gets nearly al the attention but on this track at leat, Mary shines like an intricately cut diamond. The arrangement and her performance is sensuous and sublime.

That was absolutely lovely. I'm ashamed to say that's the first time I actually heard a Les & Mary track. What a way to start!

Kind of an otherwordly effect..amazing how good these early multitracks sound..although you can hear tape hiss and edits, the effect is still sublime.

For those who are interested: In Bob Lefsetz's column there was the understandable outpouring of comments from his readership, many of whom owe their fame and/or career to playing a Les Paul. But there was one that was absolutely fascinating - a guy whose dad had been Les's arthritus doctor. He recounted a visit to Les's house, describing the equipment, the studio, and giving a vivid picture of Les's personality. It was posted about 3 -4 days after Les's obit appeared, in a long list of email commentary sent in, and is the last one. You can find it at www.lefsetz.com.

Hey - I just found my email on the above. (Normally I delete immediately.) It was from 18 Aug. and is titled Re- Jim Dickinson. Lots of tributes about Jim; the email I'm talking about above is by Carl Restivo.

Jonh, it's great how MOG forces us to somehow transfer music into words, and phrases come out like "shines like an intricately cut diamond," which shines like an intricately cut diamond. I'm looking forward to reading Carl Restivo, and have now subscribed to lefsetz so that the Dickenson post maybe won't continue to say Comments Closed.

dermahrk, it's great how MOG often forces us to listen to famous acts, "rescues them from ubiquity," so to speak.

Cody, otherworldly yes.  Your ears, which have noticed countless r&b samplings over the years, no doubt hear edits more easily than mine, which need a hearing aid according to family members who yell at me from the other side of the house.
