Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks recorded this 1973 LP before being recruited into Fleetwood Mac. Buckingham and Nicks bought the rights to it from Polydor and have never reissued it. Only a few rare, expensive bootleg CDs, almost all of them with poor sound quality, have fleetingly surfaced in the ensuing years, according to Amazon. Here are my two favorite tracks from the LP, whose existence I was unaware of until I came upon a copy of it in S.F. Amoeba's dollar bin a number of years ago. Amazon's reviewers seem to prefer different tracks from me. Not included in this post are two other tracks that I like almost as much: "Without a Leg to Stand On" and "Lola (My Love)."

  4. Carolyn O'Brien says Jesus, I haven't heard this album since about 1980. One of my best friends was in love with these two. Had everything. She even wanted to try belladonna in 8th grade. I'm sure you get that reference. This memory lane thing is rough. . .

  5. Spike says Time Machine, making your day makes my day. Carolyn, how's your friend holding up? References often pass me by, but I have my share of memory lane skid marks.

  6. Carolyn O'Brien says Aaah that friend . . . who knows? Haven't talked to her in over twenty years. I was referring to Stevie Nicks' solo album called "Belladonna". My old buddy wanted to get a hold of some and do a little witchcraft. I just wanted mac and cheese and Monty Python. We didn't last. . .

  7. ivylander says Oddly, this sounds kinda like a Christine McVie song. Their (and his) contribution to Fleetwood Mac becomes ever clearer. But this has more bite to it than anything their version of the Fleetwood Mac Lineup ever recorded....

  8. funkjester says Boy, thanks for posting some stuff from this record...great to hear it again! I, too, can remember the days when it could be found easily in cutout bins everywhere. Hard to believe it hasn't made it into the CD age as of yet, particularly given all the profits Warner Brothers generated from Fleetwood Mac--but then again, I don't think Buckingham's first solo effort 'Law and Order' (containing the hit single "Trouble") made it into the digital catalogue either. I always liked that record as well. The hooks, the harmonies and the pop sound that would explode into 'Rumours' in four short years are all hear on this track. 'Rumours' was the first album I ever bought as a Long Island seventh-grader, the record that started a life-long affair with great pop songs long before my tastes deepened into many other far-reaching genres. Here's the seeds, though, you can hear them loud and clear...gaining McVie's voice, keyboards and songwriting talents just broadened an already-formidable palette, just as Buckingham and Nicks brought something new to the table for the remaining three in the always-evolving Fleetwood Mac. Thanks again for this!

  9. Spike says Carolyn, oh yes, _Belladonna_. It's better to listen to it than ingest it. "Leather and Lace" is a good song from it. ivylander, you might be right. Let me add that Peter Green made early Fleetwood Mac intensely bluesy, but Lindsey Buckingham's melodies and guitar could sometimes sound like something one could imagine someone like Charlie Patton performing in a 1920's Mississippi juke joint.

  11. funkjester says Is one thing I really love about Fleetwood Mac, is how the sound kept evolving over the years. I'm very partial to the Danny Kirwan years, particularly 'Bare Trees,' and I find lots from 'Penguin' and even 'Heroes Are Hard To Find' that I like, despite the fact that many feel Bob Welch never fit with the band. Buckingham and Nicks sure brought them to L.A. and California for good though, that's for sure.

  12. Spike says funkjester, you put that rather eloquently. I also like his song "I Must Go" from his _Go Insane_ from 1984.

  13. Spike says funkjester, some of the tracks that work for me are "Come a Little Bit Closer" and "Prove Your Love" from _Heroes Are Hard to Find_, "Revelation" from _Penguin_, "Child of Mine," "Sentimental Lady" and maybe "Spare Me a Little of Your Love" from _Bare Trees_, all of Bob Welch's _French Kiss_, all of _Bob Welch_ and "He's Really Got a Hold on Her" and "Don't Let Me Touch You" from his _Eye Contact_. But that's just me.

  14. funkjester says Christine McVie for me has always been a constant source of enjoyment throughout the history of Fleetwood Mac. In many ways you can follow the band's evolution through her own: her earliest songs with them still had one foot solidly in her Chicken Shack days (evidence of which is hard to find any more, but worth the search); I'm thinking of "Morning Rain" from 'Future Games.' "Homeward Bound" and "Spare Me.." from 'Bare Trees,' and "Dissatisfied" from 'Penguin,' all of which I like. Both her singing and her piano playing in those days were relentless and driving. She turned a corner somewhere towards what was to come, with the "Come a Little Bit Closer," "Prove Your Love To Me," and the title track from 'Heroes Are Hard to Find,' joining "Remember Me" off of 'Penguin' all moving away from the harder, blusier Chicken Shack sound towards the kind of tunes she'd write on the White Album, 'Rumours,' and 'Mirage." She also turns in a nice collaboration with Welch on "Bad Loser" from 'Heroes." Welch had his moments: "Hypnotized" from 'Mystery To Me' may not be his most fully-realized piece, but it has a certain catchiness to it. I always liked "Ghost" from 'Bare Trees' and "Bermuda Triangle" and "Angel" from 'Heroes' from his pen, though think the "Sentimental Lady" from 'French Kiss' is much better produced for his sound than the 'Bare Trees' version, and apparently the record-buying public thought so, also. Kirwan puts in a nice Fairport Convention-sounding "Woman of a 1000 Years" on 'Future Games,' and then really shines for me in "Child of Mine," "Sunny Side of Heaven," "Danny's Chant" and the title cut from 'Bare Trees,' where he was firmly in the driver's seat. For me, 'Bare Trees' is one of the greatest and often-overlooked Fleetwood Mac records--it stands directly in the crossroads of their journey from a British blues-based band to becoming Southern California-influenced pop sensation. It sure is a sweet journey to sit back and listen to, isn't it?

  15. Cody B says Well, it was almost as fun to read the comments, as it was hearing the tuneage. Nice worm can opening Spike. As far as why it isn't on CD? I bet the lawyers of B&N are fighting over it.. Or Lindsay is holding it up, because he doesn't like the mix.. These seems like a Rhino Handmade thing for sure..

  16. fistula spume says Sweet. Loved the tracks. I don't think I can add much to this discussion except to say "check that cover out!" When I first glanced over it I thought they were conjoined twins. Such a smoky cover. Lindsay's hair is the shiz. On his head and his chest. Thanks for posting!

  17. Spike says fistula spume, I checked the cover out, and if Lindsey's hair is the shiz (whatever that means -- wikipedia likens it to excrement), so is Stevi's, because they have the same hairdo. Ever notice how often one sees two people walking together who are are dressed alike?
