It's pretty damn much "Promiscuous II," except the simpering flirt-rap is thankfully replaced with semi-mealy-mouthed boastin' 'n' drawlin' from Nelly F., Timbo M., & Justin T., who kind of naturally seem like a trio somehow. Smart melding of personalities with a chorus sung by Ms. Furtado that I really, honestly, just want to keep listening to. The overall package is about equally appealing to its original by having better things (vocals, lyrics [much easier to not give a care about], chorus, slinky chorus synths) and also lacking:a) It lacks the equivalent to "don't get mad, don't be mean," a totally vital bridge segment of "Promiscuous" whose effect could have been easily replicated here without copycatting.b) The beat is less crispy, and so as we ride out, we're less satisfied - the best part of "Promiscuous" is those last 30 seconds, I think.c) The last chorus should play at LEAST twice, instead of only once - I know that to Timbaland the chorus is the morsel and the verse beat is the meal (and inevitably what you ride on for a while at the end), but quite frankly the beat in this song is like chewing gum whereas the chorus is a chocolate truffle. Still, everyone who's written about a song having a part that's too good with not enough repetitions tends to resign themselves, in the same breath, to the fact that it's a backhanded criticism: the artist at that point has definitely won.I am scared, though, of the album this is supposed to come on. Jay-Z, okay, whatever. The Hives? ...nnyeh... Elton John... scary. Chris Martin? Stupid. Fall Out Boy? Shut up. I'll hear this album but I hope his best work in 2007 will be on Bjork's new thing. (Wikipedia says she's gonna be on the Tim album, too. Hmm.)EDIT: Who is Timbo talking about when he says "I'm a real producer and you're just a piano man"? Scott Storch? I don't know if they have any beef, but that seems to make sense; god, I hope that's who it is...
