A Self Righteous Records Makeover

It's been a while since I've posted anything here, but I'm back.

I'm happy to announce that my humble little record label has undergone a nice little makeover with a new web site: http://www.selfrighteous.ca - check t out, download some new (some exclusive) MP3s from such artists as Himalayan Bear, The Lonesome Valley Singers, Meatdraw and Amy Honey. In other news, all of our new releases are available for purchase online, or if you want to do some footwork you can pick them up and any decent record store throughout Canada (if they don't have them ask the to order copies through Scratch Distro).

This track is from an upcoming compilation due out this October. It's the follow up to last years' Cavalcade Of The Scars - Carolyn Mark doing a strange Les Baxter-eque cover of a Run Chico Run song. Good stuff.

Best Soundtrack?

Just curious about what kind of movie soundtracks people really like. I think most are terrible, but there's some that just make for great albums on their own. Pump Up The Volume is an example of that. That was really the first movie that I actaully watched just for the soundtrack.

One of my favourites would have to be the soundtrack to Big Bad Love. If you make a movie and you have both RL Burnside (RIP) & T-Model Ford - You're pretty much rockin'. It's a fine film as well.

Here's the Tracklist & Trailer

1. Boxcar Blues - Kenny Brown
2. I Love You - Asie Payton
3. Come On In (Live) - R.L. Burnside
4. She Asked Me So I Told Her - T-Model Ford
5. My Baby's Gone - Robert Belfour
6. Sleepwalkin' - Tom Verlaine
7. Everything Is Broken - R.L. Burnside
8. Junior's Place - Junior Kimbrough
9. Long Way Home - Tom Waits
10. Goodbye - Steve Earle
11. Spiritual - Tom Verlaine & Kronos Quartet
12. Jayne's Blue Wish - Tom Waits

Here is the trailer

Fridays Here - Here's One Of My Favourites: MONDAY by Vic Ruggiero

This is from a short run solo album from Vic Ruggiero, most known for being the frontman of The Slackers, keys player for Rancid, plus numerous other ska/punk projects. This is very far from either, which really makes it stand out. Who'd ever have thought a guy from a ska band would be a great songwriter? The album as a whole is brilliant. I'd found it on Napster years ago and tried to track down a real copy for about a year until I met Vic a few summers ago. He was carrying a bunch of home made copies, most of them in cracked jewel cases... In a pillow Case. Odd little man. Great songs.

Ok, this is probably the complete opposite of Gospel

I only wish this song could be done by a bunch of soulful church-goers with their hands way up in the air. Smog's 'Ex Con', hell I'll even paste in the words for them to follow next Sunday morning.

This is my new morning song. The really abrasive synth does what coffee never could.

Here you go. spread the bad gospel

Whenever i get dressed up
I feel like an ex-con
Trying to make good

Jean jacket and tie
Feel like such a lie
When i go to your house
I feel like i'm
Casing the joint
In the grocery store
In line behind a mother and a child
I'm going to take take that child
I'm going to take take that child
I'm going to take take that child

See because alone in my room
I feel like such a part of the community
But out on the streets
I feel like a robot by the river

Alone in my room
I feel such a warmth for the community
But out on the streets
I feel like a robot by the river
Looking for a drink

Odd how relatable this song is.

I Swear I'm No Religeous Nut!!

Funny, I just noticed my 'last songs played' list, and it's packed with jesus. I'm no religious fella. I recently dug up an old album of mine of old post war gospel. It's astoundingly brilliant. Just track afetr track of gorgeous voices and occasional extension-cord organs underlaying them.

This track is most recognizable as "God's Gonna Cut You Down" by Johnny Cash, but this is the original. It's actually called "Run On For A Long Time". It's pretty great. Quite a bit more uplifting than the latter mentioned version.

If only they made beautiful gospel music for agnostic, UFO enthusiasts

Even My Choice In Breakup Music Is Off-kilter

I just picked this album up again. I think this is the 4th time I've had this album. I'll try not lose or lend this one. Seemed like a good time to pick it up. This would have to be my favorite Silver Jews record. Two listens and then I'll get into the Motorhead and cheap beer. (queue Unenthusiastic half-assed air guitar solo)

This is my own personal favourite. If not before, now would be the time it really sticks out for me. Performed by one of my favourite singers (Cash) written by one of my favourite songwriters (Waits). This song is a god-damned gem. Literally on the God-Damned part.

Nothing Like The Purgartory Of a three hour airport wait in Calgary

Well, the Self Righteous Records tour ended, for me anyway. Called back home for a family emergency. I sat in the Airport looking out at the Calgary city skyline like a small cardboard cutout. It was a strange time coming down from being with such great people (them being Amy Honey, The Lonesome Valley Singers & Meatdraw). I think this song sort of sums up a lot of the odd emotion of agony and excitement that followed the tour. Oddly, I didn't much like this song when I first heard it, but something about it kind of grew on me.

A Tribute To Hank Williams

This past New Year's Eve My good friend Jimmy Twilight of Jimmy Twilight's Lonesome Lounge (on Victoria's CFUV campus radio station) had organized an on air tribute to Hank Williams on the anniversary of his death - which as many know took place some time in the early new years morning. This track is Ryan Beattie (aka The Himalayan Bear, also the singer/guitarist of Chet). Other guests that night included Hank Pine & Lily Fawn, David P. Smith, & Clay George. I'll probably post a few more tracks down the road - but while this one isn't exactly a cover tune, it's a great tribute song to Hank.

Dante Decaro (Johnny & The Moon / Wolf Parade) Shawnigan lake Blues

This song is from last year;s Cavalcade of The Scars compilation. It was the first public release of Dante Decaro's folk stuff after Hot Hot Heat and just around the same time he joined Wolf Parade. I'm posting this as kind of an excuse to announce the release of the second 'Cavalcade Of The Scars' compilation. This time the collection will focus on Vancouver Island bands (predominantly Victoria) covering their local peers and influences. It will feature covers of such great acts as The Fine Options, Atlas Strtaegic, NoMeansNo, Run Chico Run, Daddy's hands by the likes of Meatdraw, Carolyn Mark, Johnny & The Moon, Hank Pine & Lily Fawn, Tolan McNeil amongst MANY others. I'll post more info as the project evolves. If anybody is interested in hearing more tracks Cavalcade Of The Scars on Itunes

If you've ever been messed up on moonshine & PCP while being chased out of UTah by polygomists and crooked cops with Glen Danzig tied up in the trunk - You can probably relate to this song. This song was an outtake from The Lonesome Valley Singers. It wasn't released on their upcoming album (Corpse Circus Revue) but I think it's worth a listen or three.

This track is a rare one. It's performed by my friend Ryan Beattie (aka The Himalayan Bear, The Singer/Writer/Guitarist of Chet and recently an additional member of Frog Eyes) This track is from a small run tribute CD to a local victoria songwriter David Chenery (Of The Lonesome Valley Singers). I believe about 30 copies were made, so you probably won't be hearing it anywhere else. I think it's a gem.

"The Day It Came To Earth My Baby's Hair Caught On Fire" how can you not like lyrics like that? I have to say, Even after these few years I'm still much more partial to the stuff from Atlas Strategic then the Wolf Parade incarnation. This track here is from a short run ep release that I think is long out of print.
