I have wanted a true phone from Apple for YEARS, but I’m not getting this model.Everyone I know asks me, “Why is the iPhone only at Cingular and not Verizon?” I always reply the same way – “because the fact that Cingular does not know its own name, Verizon and Apple could not work out a deal.”Unfortunately Apple is making a huge mistake in partnering with Cingular because at this point we, as consumers, don’t even know if is called Cingular or if it is AT&T. The deal allows Apple to oversee a lot of the product support and other important aspects of the entire project so their deal with them is not totally crazy, but it presents some serious issues at launch. This is how I see it in bullet-point form:
- AT&T Wireless sells to Cingular and becomes known to everyone as Cingular.
- This is ASS-BACKWARDS because wouldn’t you think that AT&T would be the one to do the buying? Well, it all makes sense if you understand corporate investment banking and acquisitions.
- So, Cingular (or whatever it is called) is so obviously not as good as Verizon when it comes to reliability and total network efficiency.
- Now, Apple is relying on this wireless network that doesn’t even know its own name in order to deliver the vital information to the iPhone. The actual network is owned by AT&T and is called Edge.
- The AT&T Network, EDGE, is very SLOOOOOOOW.
- The iPhone is not compatible with future network changes so if the network is upgraded, well, you will have to buy a newer model to have the faster network. THIS IS HUGE.
- This means, if you buy the phone now it will be slow until the day it becomes a trophy on the shelf.
- It can connect to HOTspots, but so what? Now, I have to pay for wireless broadband (I live in Philly, not Mountain View) so I can have quick access to the Internet. I read somewhere that it takes 100 seconds to load the Amazon home page (I’ll post the link later since it is on a different computer).
- This is not an iPod I am buying. As a media device this thing is AMAZING! It is a phone and phones need networks and I need Verizon. Verizon is the best and most reliable network and there is no way I am switching to a network that doesn’t know its own name just to have a cooler phone than the Treo700 I use right now.
- The phone is still only 8Gigs minus formatting room minus like 700MB of operating system software so that leaves you room for about three or so movies if you want to max it all out. GOOD THING you have the widescreen on there so we can watch all those movies and tv shows.
- With only 8Gigs of space they should really have an external card that would allow for an extra few Gigs, but that obviously isn’t the case.
