PAN FOR GOLD. WE'VE GOT ORE GALORE.

Another new track

Posted over 2 years ago
Here's the first track of my new album. There's a short story behind this one, too. When I was young, I used to tap dance. My mom was a dance teacher and taught in downtown St. Louis a few days a week. I was brought along and naturally, at 3 years old, started taking the class for little kids--you know, this is your right foot, this is your left foot... i guess all you do for the first year is the Hokey Pokey.I stuck with it for about 13 years, and did a few things sporadically throughout high school. Tap dancing was my first real exposure to music, and jazz in particular. I used to watch old movies with my mom, and I'd see the Nicholas Brothers doing routines backed by Cab Calloway and the like. This song was written for Fayard and Harold Nicolas.Initially, I took the rhythm of a popular tap step called a "triple time step" and wrote that guitar riff using some of the accents. Then I developed it from there, using a few other rhythms, and ultimately some changes in the time signature, etc. I don't think anybody would want to tap dance to the final result, but that wasn't the point. The name, and I hate naming songs, started out as a combination of their names: Fayard+Harold+Nicholas=Farolas. But that makes no sense, so I changed it to Fearless which is still appropriate if you ever seen these guys do their thing. Here's the most famous example for you to watch after you finish listening to the music:

  1. rock or death says yeah, man! Loving this tune! You can really groove with that rare groove style funkiness. Great players on the tune as well, organ, bass, drums. sweet....

  2. Soulfunksticat says I guess I should have given props to my band... Mike Fortune on drums, and Brad Whiteley plays the organ, Rhodes, and synth bass (he was basically surrounded by keyboards). I play guitar. We ran everything through a variety of vintage gear, so the bass was actually coming out of an old Ampeg tube amp and speaker cabinet, and it sounded frighteningly a lot like a '70s P-Bass. And of course, both those guys are monster players, so they add a lot to the new record.
