Tribute or insult?

Posted over 2 years ago
Tribute or insult, tribute or insult... that's what went through my head before I recorded Cold Sweat with my trio for our upcoming album. Not a day passes that I don't hear a James Brown tune (see my music collection...). Especially considering his recent passing, I thought it would be appropriate to take a stab at recording a song he wrote.I chose Cold Sweat because it's relatively easy to translate to a trio. There aren't too many syncopated horn parts, just the "So What" riff and a funky bass line. The tricky part would be the melody and more importantly, keeping the groove happening and interesting for a stretched out solo section.JB recorded this many times, and each version seemed to get a little faster. So I threw out the question to the guys, "Do we do this back in a pocket or up in everyone's face?" After explaining I meant "slow or fast" Brad, the organist, said "Both." Duh.So here it is. Take a listen. Tell me what you think. I kind of like it, so honestly I could care less if you don't, but I'll take the criticism constructively before I consider recording another tune by the Godfather of Soul.

  1. starstuff says Tribute! Fun track. Love the tempo changes -- that was a clever idea. I'd love to see a video some time of you playing this with people on a dance floor. Even better if they were all fans and knew the tempo changes were coming and everybody was all in sync. That would be funky, no?

  2. samuraijohnny says Definitely Tribute. The fact that you worked on it as much as you did to make it a funky track rather than just copying JB makes it more of a tribute than anything like, say, Christina Aguilera's performance at the Grammys. And I personally love tempo changes in songs . . . especially going from fast to slow. To me, there's nothing funkier than hitting the pocket after running (or something like that).
