First Dances

As a musician, a lot of my friends ask me to play at their wedding. I love doing it because it's one way I can really contribute what I do best to an important event for a best friend. I don't do the wedding band thing, I just play a song in the ceremony, or provide prelude music, etc. For a friend's wedding coming up in May, I've been asked to play "It's Your Love" (Tim McGraw & Faith Hill) for their first dance. I'll actually be accompanying my friend (mentioned in the License to Sell post below) and his wife who will sing the duet. Now, I'm not a country music fan. I listen to Johnny Cash and some old Hank Williams (the first one), but I'm just not into the current scene. Thing is, I didn't think my friend was either, so why did they choose THIS song for their first dance? Then I thought, how does anybody choose the soundtrack for their symbolic first dance? When my wife and I were considering this, we first wanted to do something fun, like a tango. We both have dance backgrounds--she was a ballerina for many, many years, and I grew up tap dancing until I was about 16. We swing dance pretty well too, mostly because I understand how to lead and she understands how to follow and look really good (see, most ladies try to lead because most guys can't, so they fight me when I'm leading. But actually, the guy is just supposed to lead with very small gestures, and make his partner look good, something my wife is excellent at doing). Anyway, to make a long story short we ditched the idea of entertaining our guests with our first dance and went with Peter Gabriel's "In Your Eyes" because it was the theme of the first high school dance we went to together. Cute, right? But in all honesty, it's a great song, nobody complained. And for my first dance with my mom, who was my dance teacher growing up, was to Count Basie and Joe Williams "Singin' In The Rain." People seemed to enjoy that.So how does everybody else choose their first dance song? And what's the craziest first dance song you've ever witnessed?
