WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Again, Dexter Gordon

Posted over 3 years ago
Over the weekend, a friend of mine was in town. He's a pianist and we talked about playing jazz and trying to be independent musicians, etc. (he was actually stopping through New York on his first union gig--a two week tour of Taiwan). I pulled out "Our Man In Paris" by Dexter Gordon and we listened to it for a bit. I've transcribed all of Dexter's playing, wrote some of it down, so we were checking that out.I've said it before, but it needs to be said again. I don't care who you are or what kind of music you're into: Get this album. The music might be instrumental jazz, technically a straight up bebop date, but the emotion that guy fits through his horn is unbelievable. Anybody can relate to that.

  2. staxman says X-pats Bud Powell & Kenny Clarke help sell this disc, too. Great bop, indeed.

  3. appaloosa says I only have one DG album in my collection (not being a fan of bop, hard bop, fusion, etc), and although it is a collection (the music can be found on other albums), this is as good as it gets. Love those ballads. Dex at his soulful best: ~app

  4. Etop says I started listening to Dexter around 1959 and the first tune I transcribed was Doing Allright. I probably have 90 percent of his recordings. He was probably my biggest influence although my friends say I sound like Lester Young. To bad Tubby Hayes passed away before his time. Enough for now.

  5. david terrar says I have to agree with you all, except Go! is my particular favourite. And Dexter as Dale Turner is the all time great jazz performance on film - such a shame it was the academy's time to give Newman an oscar that year. And Etop - if you sound like Lester Young, I want to hear you. My particular Hayes favourite is Don't Fall Off That Bridge by Paul Gonsalves & The Tubby Hayes Allstars.

  6. Soulfunksticat says Go! is probably most people's first choice, and I can't blame them. They're both incredible blowing dates. I just happen to have a special place in my playing for "Our Man In Paris" because I transcribed all his solos at one point. Tubby Hayes is excellent as well. There needs to be a separate thread about him... I'll get that started.
