WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Grandpa Davis

Posted over 2 years ago
When I was walking to class today, "Concierto de Aranjuez" from Miles Davis' album _Sketches of Spain_ popped up on the old portable. How a song that clocks in at over sixteen minutes got on there I have no idea, but it was a pleasant surprise. My grandfather loved jazz, and he wisely chose _Sketches of Spain_, one of the most accessible albums with which to introduce me to Miles. I mentioned this in passing to my father this afternoon on the phone, and he related this funny little anecdote from when I was about six years old that I don't remember.Evidently I was sitting at the kitchen table one afternoon with my grandfather playing a board game, and out of nowhere he said, "Rakel, be sure you marry someone riiche. One learns to love."I looked at him quizzically, "But zaide, can't I get a job when I grow up?"He laughed, "Ohkay, your husband can wear zee pearls."

  2. Spike says Now we know where your humor genes came from. It's hard to find a bad Miles Davis/Gil Evans collaboration. "Concierto de Aranjuez" hits the spot.

  7. Smooth Hegemon says Mike: For a guy born in a tiny Iranian village without any running water, I'd say yeah, he soaked up some of the best occidental culture had to offer. Jonh: I've already said "no thanks" to the little blue box once and I think my zaide would have approved. I don't find employment disagreeable in the least. Thanks, Ray!

  9. Lester Jonze says I fucking love this album, although I don't really see it as very accessible. Maybe my tastes in Miles are to casual and callow to wrap myself round this beautiful dead afternoon music.
