the human riff

Posted over 5 years ago
imagine for one moment. the year is 1969. no internet, no cable, no satellite. there's this thing fm radio, but being only 13, I'm not hip to that. you're driving in a car with your family with the am radio on when suddenly your brain is jolted by this sound. a cowbell followed by drums and a guitar riff. then the vocals, "I met a gin soaked bar room queen in memphis". my attention is diverted from torturing my younger brothers to the radio as I ask my dad to turn it up. the chorus kicks in with the bass and the song builds like a out of control freight train rolling down a mountain.the dj announces that the song was honky tonk woman by the rolling stones and I think to myself, I got to get me a guitar. years later I would ask myself, how did they get that song on the radio? (" I laid a divorcee in NY city" yes I play a bad guitar. happy birthday keith, the human riff.

  2. ZZTodd says one of my favorite stones songs. i discovered it in 2000 though, lol. it's so hard to catch up on classic rock greatness when you grew up in the 90s.

  3. RobP says There are advantages to being old. But it's hard to be as old as the Stones. I remember Jimmy Page one time saying you could forgive Keith for anything because of the guitar on Dance Little Sister. But of course, what did Keith do that Jimmy Page would think required forgiveness? Anyway, I love Keith, falling out of trees at whatever age, what a guitar player, what a songwriter.
