The Long Winters

Well, MOG's "Recently Played" list may be ignoring the fact that I've played this record straight thru twice, but how can it ignore a disc this good? A lot of records need time to sink in before I take to them, but this one's reeling me in with a barbed hook through my cheek from the get go. I loved their last record When I Pretend to Fall, though I recall having reservations upon hearing one of it's less familiar songs late one stoned night while Winamp was on 'random' and my muddled brain couldn't identify which band was playing. That song sounded overblown to me (forget which one it was), and when I finally checked the playlist I thought "that was the Long Winters? I could've sworn I loved them". Well, based on the evidence of Pretend's other tunes and now this new record, yes, I think I do love this band. It's kind of Americana, but not so much that it gets boring, just enough that it sounds somewhat earthy and good for you. And then there are those huge hooks that John Roderick sings in his totally guy-next-door voice. A very easy record to fall in love with, I think."Teaspoon" is awesome. There may be more worthy of awesomeness ("Rich Wife" is close), but the heat is starting to narcotize me into unconciousness and I wanted to sound off before I pass out.
