Nevermind the horrowshow of 80s-era, Dianne Warren-sponsored Heart, that was some malign shit fer sure. But damn if the original incarnation of this band wasn't exceptionally fine. The arrangement on Magic Man never fails to surprise me with the sharp use of percussion, harmonies, disciplined guitars and non-cheesy synthesizer. Like the alchemy of a Led Zep, the Wilsons made rock that was kinda 'hard' kinda 'poppy' with lots of good playing that didn't call attention to itself. They could get impressively mellow [dog&butterfly], seriously rocking [barracudda], spookyish [aforementioned magic man], and employed a wide pallette of sounds in their music. They don't get enough props, and their devolution into a wretched mess was sad, unessecary and did their rep no favors. Let the reconsideration begin.

i remember in their hey day they did a show at the indiana state fairgrounds, it was killer. later that summer we saw styx on the grand illusion tour........those were the days
I have no kind words for styx, but yeah, Heart in their prime must've been good. Why would they agree to record those songs like 'alone' [there were worse, too]? And that song where she sleeps with some strange dude just to have his baby. Oh well, we'll always have Barracuda
