Collaboration Summer!

Posted almost 3 years ago

It's always fun to mashup different genres. World Village has two pretty interesting collaborations coming up:

"Rishte" is a mix of blues/rock and Indian music, which sounds very cool, very psychedelic. It's Indian artist Najma Akhtar and Gary Lucas (Jeff Buckley, Captain Beefheart):

"Saints & Tzadiks" is really different, a combination of Irish and Jewish folk music, with Susan McKeown and Lorin Sklamberg (Klezmatics):

No songs to upload yet, obviously...

That Najma track on MySpace is quite wonderful. Her CD of Bollywood covers is a classic....

I am so excited about this new release from one of my all-time favorite singers!  I loved all three songs.  Even the blues one, which is a stretch for me.  Sometimes a pop song is performed by an artist in their native language and it's just the same in a different language.  But this singing and instrumental setting are truly special.

Najma is certainly a world treasure.  Born and raised in London to Pakistani parents, her solo work and collaborations are beautiful and musically satisfying.  Her album Qareeb combines Persian Ghazals with her own music for violin, bass, tabla alto & soprano sax and a little discreet keyboard.  Mog does not show it on Najma's page but see my 4/26/09 post Najma Akhtar: Ravishing Ghazals  http://mog.com/Spike_1/blog/1287737 .

I second ivylander's comment.  There's also Atish and Pukar

There's also an interesting discussion on Boudolino's Asha Bhosle post http://mog.com/Baudolino/blog/1286638#comments .

THANK YOU FOR SHARING THIS GORGEOUS ITEM!

No time to hear the second selection.  Later.

Wow, you're a huge Najma fan!  :)  That's great.  I'm just discovering her through this but she has a beautiful voice.  I'll go read your post on Ravishing Ghazals.
