Modest Mouse, R.E.M Show @ Greek Theater 5/31/08

Posted over 3 years ago
May 31, I had the pleasure of attending the R.E.M and Modest Mouse concert @ The Greek Theater in Berkeley. (Super cool venue by the way.) Opening was The National of which I hadn't really heard a whole lot from them. They kinda had a Coldplay feel to them. But I can tell you the one thing I was most impressed by was the instrumentals more than anything. Although I am a sucker for great musical talent. I think I counted a total of 8 people on stage all playing a different instrument. This to me was very cool. I enjoyed them.PhotobucketThen I was STOKED to see Modest Mouse coming up next!PhotobucketModest Mouse was really the whole reason I went to this concert. I can't get enough of Isaak Brock, and was not disappointed AT ALL when he hit the stage. Although I was a bit disappointed in the crowd. Granted, most of the crowd seemed to have been there for REM and I also can understand that most people either love Modest Mouse or they hate them. But for God sake, my friend and I seemed to have been the only ones standing and enjoying the show. As for most everyone else just gave what seemed to be a courtesy clap at the end of each song. This is what bummed me out. I truly believe the energy adds to the experience of a show and it just didn't seem to be there.Isaak BrockPhotobucketJohnny MarrPhotobucketPhotobucketAs for their performance, it was nothing short of AWESOME! As for R.E.M..PhotobucketThey played a great set, including songs from their 1st album and more of the older obscure stuff, and of course the crowd really riled up when they hit the stage. They were having an "on" night for sure.PhotobucketMy only complaint on their set was in between songs there was ALOT of political talk. I sometimes think that bands overstep their bounds. I feel I am there to see a show, not to hear their political beliefs. Now granted I am aware that I was in one of the most passionately liberal cities, I for one just really could have done without it.Photobucket

  1. contrabandwidth says It looks like I maybe playing the cool uncle card and taking my niece to go see MM in Miami. I've been a fan for sometime, but just never made the effort to see them live. Should be interesting since she's 13 going on 30.

  2. annieander says Great picts. Sarah. I know what you mean about the band chat on stage. It's a fine line between talking to much and racing on to the next song. Let me know if you are in the area for any other shows. We are all going to see Death Cab at the Greek on the 21st.

  3. Shud33 says Ooh..Contra! Have fun. They really are worth seeing. Annie, you are SO lucky! Death Cab is one I always seem to miss. I look forward to the day of actually seeing Ben Gibbard in action. Such an amazing song writer. I look forward to your review! Oh, and I will for sure let you know if I make it out there to any other shows!

  4. Dale says Yeah, the political banter can get a bit old, especially since he's really preaching to the choir in San Fran. I wonder if he's get such a rousing reception for such banter at, say, Salt Lake City. :) And sorry the crowd didn't pitch in during Modest Mouse. I'm not a huge fan of theirs, but I know the sting of being one of the few to be excited to see a band and wondering why the rest of the crowd are sitting on their hands. So, when's the Phantom Jets' big Midwest swing? ;)

  5. Shud33 says Dale, lol seriously. Yeah, it did kinda suck, but at least I enjoyed them. Hmm, I don't know. But if it ever happens you will be the first to know! ;)

  6. Bartleby says Looks like a great night of music by great bands... Great pictures, thanks for sharing with us. On the subject of politics, I understand that as a citizen of a given country you're bound to have preferences regarding who should be governing over your "city." But just because people come to see you on stage it doesn't mean they're more interested in your political views than your music. Bono, Chris Martin, Michael Stipe, a clue for you: your public is really for the music. Really!

  7. Anna says Thanks for the review! National good, Coldplay bad ;) I'm not a Modest Mouse fan, but that situation is always bad :( With you on the mplah mplah mplah. Play. Play. PLAY. Yup.

  8. Augusts1 says Great report Sarah. Like I said on Sunday I've seen REM twice back in the '80s & they rocked live. I lost interest in them in the early '90s though. Haven't yet seen MM & I love them. Sounds like a great show.

I imagine this was a great show. Suprisingly enough growing up around Atlanta and having easy access to Athens in the mid/late eighties I seem to have missed REM....Modest Mouse as well.Although I think they are scheduled for ATL very soon.It would personally be an honor to see them do "Talkin Shit About A Pretty Sunset"....pardon my language.
