The Best Bassists?

Posted over 2 years ago
Listening to Birdland, and thinking about how amazing Jaco Pastorius' bass playing sounds. This got me thinking about who i would consider in the best bassists ever. I personally would probably include Rick Danko of The Band, Roger Waters, the Jam's Bruce Foxton and Ben Folds Five's Robert Sledge, however I'd be interested to hear other suggestions

  1. ivylander says This is probably pretty obvious, but I don't think McCartney has ever gotten full credit for his skills. The man can propel a song. Also, in response to a post yesterday, I mentioned the great Motown bassist James Jamerson - he's gotta be on anybody's list.

  6. Mojination says Bernard Edwards from Chic was a damn funky mofo. For jazz, while I love Jaco, Charles Mingus was the shit. That dude could carry an orchestra on his basslines. My personal favorite is Paul Simonon from The Clash. He's argueably the best un-schooled bassist.

  7. cocopuffED says While I agree with almost all of the bassists mentioned in the above seven comments, I can't believe that any knowledgable discussion pf Weather Report in general and bassists in particular, does not list Jaco Pastorius at the very top of everyones list. Tragic as his story is, Jaco produced two of the more memorable WR albums, and his ability with the fretless electric bass will be often imitated, but never duplicated. Everyone who has ever worked with him admits he was a genius. I ya don't believe me, just listen to Teen Town!
