Due to requests, from time to time I'll be posting lyrics from the songs on the "K.I.A.": and "Shinjuku Zulu" releases. Below are the lyrics for the song "Mrs Major Tom" (at iTunes "HERE" ). This song (Major Tom Part IV?), told from the wife's perspective, expands on the story began by David Bowie in "Space Oddity" and continued in "Ashes to Ashes" (also by Bowie,) and in Pete Schilling's"Major Tom (Coming Home)". Anyone interested in memes (the viral spread of an idea) might want to check out this "Major Tom epidemic on Wikipedia":http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Major_Tom Vocals by Larissa Gomes... You went up, so bright Tom Thought my love was rocketing you along When you didn't come back, and didn't come back My nova heart collapsed To a black, black hole Floating on sine waves in inner space Awaiting a signal of grace From ground control, to lost control, Ballet to battle, halo to hole You were so far gone Right was wrong, up was down. By going still further on, you hoped to come around. It was light years long, dear husband Tom. At last back you've come... Yet still, you're gone. Floating on sine waves in inner space Awaiting a signal of grace From ground control, to lost control, Ballet to battle, halo to hole I watched the skies, for all that time, And now your asteroid eyes Say you were never mine. Never mine, never mine, Never, never mine... Floating on sine waves in inner space Awaiting a signal of grace From ground control, to lost control, Ballet to battle, halo to hole You didn't burn up, my Major Tom. You just burnt out. You just burnt out.

WHAT?!?
From the first time i heard the song (well, the very first time i could make out the lyrics), thirty-plus years ago, i always interpreted the linesas referring to some kind of mystical/metaphorical transcendence, not unlike the end of *2001*.
Major Tom isn't dead - he's off on the Ultimate Trip.
