Ratatat at Slim's in San Francisco, July 10, 2008

Artist:
I was exceptionally pleased by Ratatat's show last night Slim's. They played tracks off their album Classics, and I was impressed by their live performance. While the guitarist creates Ratatat's signature sound, the sounds generated by the keyboardist/percussionist and the bass player came to the front of the music.
They were energetic and didn't waste time trying to be cute. (Towards the end, people were calling out requests. One bandmember came to the mic and admitted good-naturedly, "I really can't understand what you're saying.")
I hadn't expected them to look so, well, indie. Big fros, long hair, tight jeans. The guitarist is a bloody contortionist, the way he limbos backward while he plays.
The opener was odd: it was a DJ who wore a shroud over his face with a bandana and sunglasses. Not being able to see his face forced you to watch his hands, but it was also distracting. I wasn't terribly impressed with the sounds he created, run-of-the-mill videogame electronica, complete with Wii controller and Macbook.
They played several new tracks, which were also exceptional. I thought these tracks dabbled further into electronica, with faster beats. Overall, a fantastic band to see live.

I'm glad that many people realize that being cute really is a waste of time. Leave the cuteness to kittens, know what I mean? :)
Thanks for the cool review. Haven't seen Ratatat live, but I will hop to it when I get the chance.
Cheers and welcome to MOG! :)
