WE DO THE MASHED POTATO AND THE FUNKY CHICKEN

After 10 years of appreciation, I finally saw Les Nubians perform - well really Blue Nefertiti

Celia of Les Nubians aka Blue Nefertiti, Katz and me

As much as I love my Princey Poo Poo (Prince - I still check your website. Come on dude? COME BACK waay!), as much as I love my big brother Maxwell (online joke we are not really related but he allows me to say it!), as much as I adore Amel Larrieux, I have this SAME intensity of appreciation for Les Nubians. I've been a fan since the beginning of their career in 1998 with the release of their album, Princesses Nubiennes.

For EVA, I've always wanted them to perform LIVE but my schedule was not permitting it.

On Wednesday I received an email from Les Nubians mailing list seve to let me know that Celia of the group would be performing (as Blue Nefertiti) here in New York City on Sunday in the East Village at Drom. I had to go regardless of the cold weather and the snow outside. There were no excuses, I HAD TO GO.

Well, I went and OMG, it was a fantastic experience. Celia set the tone of a Paris Cabaret. She talked about in France how there is love everywhere and people just kissing everywhere in the streets on the subway. Of course I was cracking up! It is true though, I've been to Paris but this was in 1985 but I do recall exchange of slobber A LOT!

Celia was energetic and sophisticated in her perfomances of French songs which I had no clue of what she was saying but I know it was about love. She had us sing along (okay the crowd was WEAK) but we tried. But, you know I was singing but I did not want to kill anyone off because I cannot sing for the LIFE of me. I recall only one song from her work as Les Nubians but the rest were all new to me.

Next year in the 2009, Les Nubians, will be releasing a NEW album and doing performances. So, please come out and support. I was surprised how afforable the entire evening was for you had to pay only $15 at the door for admission (in cash) but if you wanted a meal, the minimum price started at about $12 which totally fit my budget. I spent MORE money taking a CAB (from the Upper West Side) for the admission!

By the way, I would like to give some love to my neighbor who was coming out of a CAB and I was able to take her cab down to the venue and arrive in time to meet my friend. My neighbor said to me, "dang, I have never seen you so happy." I said you have NO CLUE how happy I am. Shoot, I was COLD (December 21 2008 was the FIRST day of Winter!) standing out there trying to flag a cab then by divine intervention the cab pulls up and I literally ran to the cab as though my life depended on it. I could NOT allow anyone to take that cab so I could go see Celia as Blue Nefertiti. After 10 years of wanting to see Les Nubians, I had every right to be as delirious as I was for you have no idea the excitement in my heart I had.

Who can beat this feeling?! Seeing them all again - Amel Larrieux, Prince (reclaim your website PLEASE! Come on! We love you!) , Maxwell and Les Nubians! Ahh I'm so happy. This year has ended on a high note. Thank you, Celia, I am so grateful for this opportunity to see you live. And, YES, I am coming out AGAIN. I'm an ultimate appreciator. xoxo

Now, Princey Poo Poo come BACK to New York, PLEASE! 8)

Interview of Celia of Les Nubians

Music but not as Blue Nefertiti but this was the aura I had from Cella which is love and peace and an interview. I appreciate ALL of the artists they are naming. I have been a fan of Fela Kuti, Miriam Makeba (I wrote a blog about her here ) and even their introduction to me of Souleymane Diamanka. I am TOTALLY obsessed with his voice by the way! Ahh!
