Odetta - Cotton Fields
A generation of voices are dying. A generation of voices of substance, voices that told stories are dying. People get older and transition. It's a fact of life.
However, losing Miriam Makeba and now losing Odetta is a blow to my soul of those who represented an era that my parents were subject to called segregation. That segregation evolved into integration but still there are the constant battles to be respected and heard by those who still believe that there are levels of inferiority and superiority.
There is a change coming with the election of Barack Obama as the 44th President of the United States of America. A very good change that will hopefully open the eyes of some but regardless we know that racism will exist. See here: Google Trends on Articles on Racism
At least, Odetta, knew or may have been aware that within her lifetime she experienced segregation and discrimination. Now, her country (my country too) elected a man who embodies change!
Let's pray for Odetta's spirit for she has gone to glory!

Yes, I agree with you that a lot of people of a certain generation are leaving us. It seems every month we hear of their passing. We must look to the future and I do hope that B. Obama is that person. Thanks for this testimonial
Thank you for sharing your thoughts and reading. It has been very hard for me these past couple of months to see all these legendary figures die but I know they left a legacy for all of us to embrace and learn from. I don't want their stories to be lost! Bless you!
