WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

The Decemberists

Posted over 2 years ago
This band just recently popped into my life after seeing them at Bonnaroo '07. When I got home, I went ahead and downloaded "The Crane Wife" on iTunes. This may have been one of the best purchases I have ever made. This whole album is solid, from end to end. My favorites are The Crane Wife 3, Shankill Butchers, O Valencia, and the end segment of The Island. One thing that really does bug me, however, is the fact that some songs (The Island, The Crane Wife 1 and 2) are essentially multiple songs on one track. I don't know if this bothers anyone else, but I am a rabid iPod user, and if I just want to put one section of a song on a playlist, or listen to that one section, i have to skip ahead 8 or 9 minutes to get to it. I don't see why the band couldn't have seperated these tracks. The same thing annoyed me with Green Day's "Jesus of Suburbia". I guess I have to deal with it and appreciate that The Decemberists thought it had some significant artistic relevance to have a 12 minute track containing 4 different songs.Once you get past that tiny flaw that I'm sure only annoys ME, the album is seriously worth every penny. If you don't already own it, I'm gonna go ahead and give it 9 stars out of 10, and recommend you buy it.Ok, bye.I love you,John

  2. debi says Someone on Mog got me hooked on the Decemberists - favorite is "I Was Meant for the Stage" from Her Majesty. I was meant for the stage, I was meant for the curtain. I was meant to tread these boards, Of this much I am certain. I was meant for the crowd, I was meant for the shouting. I was meant to raise these hands With quiet all about me. Oh, Oh. Mother, please be proud. Father, be forgiving. Even though you told me 'Son, you'll never make a living.' Oh, oh. From the floorboards to the flys, Here I was fated to reside. And as I take my final bow, Was there ever any doubt? And as the spotlights fade away, And you're escorted through the foyer, You will resume your callow ways, But I was meant for the stage. The heavens at my birth Intended me for stardom, Rays of light shone down on me And all my sins were pardoned. I was meant for applause. I was meant for derision. Nothing short of fate itself Has affected my decision. Oh, oh. And from the floorboards to the flys, Here I was fated to reside. And as I take my final bow, Was there ever any doubt? And as the spotlights fade away, And you're escorted through the foyer, You will resume your callow ways, But I was meant for the stage.

  3. amber says All the Decemberists music is solid...don't stop at Crane Wife, trust me. And aren't they just the BEST live??? I had the pleasure of spending some time with Chris Funk and Jenny Conlee a few weeks ago and I can tell you they are just about the nicest people ever too.

  4. dermahrk says Yes, I have this CD and had exactly the same response about the multiple songs listed as one track. What I do is split them, using a cheap sound editing program, then re-load on the Ipod as separate tracks. Exactly for the same reason you cite - I like one segment but not all, so who wants to sit through the first segments?
