WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Listening to the new Smashing Pumpkins album

Posted over 2 years ago
First off, let me say that the smashing pumpkins are one of my favorite bands ever, and i've been waiting eagerly for the release of this record since Billy Corrigan said it might happen (more than 2 years ago).I listened to it on the radio tonight. There are definately some cool instrumentals, and there are parts of songs that I like a lot, but ultimately it feels like Billy Corrigan has nothing left to say. The lyrics and vocals on Siamese Dream and Melancholie were so urgent and relavent, and the lyrics here are often one meaningless line repeated over and over again. Jimmy Chamberlin talked about one track (which is a very percussive 9-minute drum-led song) as being the best thing he's ever done. But it doesn't seem as impressive or neccesary as some of the beats he laid down on Deux Machina.I also don't like the percieved emo and new metal influence...The truth is I probably wouldn't complain if it was any other band, but it seems very lackluster for the Smashing Pumpkins. Maybe I'm holding it to a rediculously high standard, but it is a standard they created. There's a chance that I'll change my mind when I listen to it again, but i wouldn't be surprised if after one of two more hearings, I totally forgot about this.
