Piracy Installation Piece

Posted almost 5 years ago
For my drawing class, we are doing a project on collections. My most blatant collection is CDs. I branched off of that and came up with a couple of ideas that my professor said would work. Now, they're very raw, so I was kind of hoping for your help, for a new eye, and what you think about it and how I might twist it up. There are two pieces to the project:1. I burn a copy of all or nearly all of my music, place it in a public area with a professional looking sign that simply says something along the lines of "These are burned CDs and they are Free for the Taking." I would also want to include a bin for depositing burned or not burned CDs as an exchange. In other words, a three dimensional P2P, which my school has recently decided to crack down on. Alternatives I have thought of include: Not putting the actual music the CD says it is of on the CD and putting a spoof of that music in it's place, speeding up the music or slowing it down (any programs that easily alter tempo?), or do you just like leaving it correct artist with correct music? OR MAYBE write wrong artists on wrong CDs because P2P always fucks that up. Also, putting a fake security camera on the wall directly in front of the display.2. The second part is taking CD cases and their sleeves, blowing up this FBI warning label to become the main image on the cover and using the actual cover as a thumbnail in the corner. My teacher suggested having the FBI label pixelated occasionally, zooming in and out on it so it isn't clear and having the actual album art extremely clear. He suggested the two pieces stay away from each other in their setting. He also said I'd want to leave this as simply a classroom piece so I don't get in trouble with the university, but I honestly want to see what could happen (seeing as how it's an art project) and I want to see how well a 3 dimensional P2P might actually work. Please, if you read this and thought, oh well I think it would be cool if, write down your if in a comment. I will not think anything to be stupid AT ALL. I will embrace it and you. Thanks :)

  1. dwnsideupturtle says my confusion lies in how these are classified under matt's sketchy guidelines as projects appropriate for a drawing class. i keep having ideas and dismissing them because of that. sigh. i'm jealous that you are all reved up for this project. i think it (as in both) would be amazing and i know you want to do this and i know you would go all out and i know you would actually like to start a controversy and get in trouble with the university but.... i don't know. i know both of these sound like projects YOU could really get into beause of your passion for the idea at the very core of both projects. the first one seems like what you really want to do, but aren't sure if it's feasible.

  2. ZZTodd says i think its a very cool idea. like you, i would like to see what happens if you put that in a large-crowd type setting. i wouldn't be suprised if something like this got you in trouble, but what's art without a little bit of controversy, right?
