MOG MOG

BECAUSE THE WEB MOSTLY SUCKS

Artist:

Real talk, I haven't been around to chat with y'all about the music we've been listening to or missing due to life's constant interruptions. Oh, to be a shut-in...

Anyway, I stumbled over this Lupe vid, and wondered what y'all thought about his comments on racism and leaders. No biggie. I find his candor really interesting just because few people actually have enough nerve to be realistic. I forgot who said it, but I'll agree: Lupe is a genius (musically). Basically, everything is subjective to a point where I have to stop and ask Why do we (as humans) have such a gang mentality?

Lupe made a good point, that the economy was built on slavery and racism. He seems to think we can't create a new future unless we forget the past, instead of learn from it (what not to do, at least). I didn't agree with a lot of what he said, but like you, I'm in favour of raising the issues.

Dammit, I can't get it to play past :02, either here or on the original youtube page. Tried two different browsers...

If Lupe suggests that FORGETTING the past is the key to a better future, he's dead wrong. Never mind the saying that history forgotten will be repeated, what about honoring those who struggled, fought and died?

(for some reason, my MOG says this vid is no longer available. well damn that) darmuzz, I'm pretty sure we feel the same way, but he walks this fine line on issues where I'm with him, I'm with him... oh, he lost me.

Scotch, I'm not sure he's suggesting that we _should_ forget the past, but he definitely makes it clear that a knowledge of racism breeds racism. I agree with you about honoring the struggle, and I think his mind state is thinking in terms of utopia rather than equality. They both seem so out of reach, that it's easy to toss 'em in the same bag, but you and I (for instance) are aware of the atrocities of the past without holding grudges toward a sect of people. I think the real problems are those who not only remember the past, but use it to fuel themselves and/or their children. Whether it be a form Klan member who says these people have gotten out of control or a militant black who blames everything on the "white man". At some point, it comes down to the individual level and how responsible people are willing to be for their thoughts and actions. We can all be angry about events (past and present), but we gotta be constructive in our endeavors to make attempt to correct the problems. Unfortunately, I do agree that a future free from racism or classism or whatever is mostly unattainable. Realistically, and tragically, there will always be someone blindly hateful towards the "other" "different" people.

Cool, I finally got to see this.

I agree with him on principle, if not on the "facts" he presented, or his angle on it. When he says, "lead yourself," I'm assuming he means that - like you said - people need to take responsibility for their actions, and I can get behind that.

As time goes by, I think to myself that cultural anthropology was the most important classes I took in college, because it taught me to think about why we think like we do. That line of thinking allows me to draw a line between self-preservation and racism. Stay with me...

When one considers that we developed over time as relatively small pockets of people, who, over time, got used to a certain way of being, looking, getting things done, etc. They lived, died and bred together, and that was "safe" - everyone knew everyone's business. Now throw a new group or individual in, with a different look, be it color, height, build, whatever. That person is automatically suspect, because they are alien and perceived as unpredictable, smarter/dumber, stronger/dumber... a threat. Indeed they might be a threat to order, with their different social and moral beliefs, some of which might be unseemly and abhorent to the first group.

It certainly wouldn't take long for this reasoning to take hold, but this fear and intolerance has been fostered for millenia, and it isn't going to go away overnight#, and it isn't the only reason racism remains, but what I believe is the genesis for racism. Racism is simply a product of the above fear and intolerance.

_# I vaguely remember a movie that said something like this: racism will go away overnight only if little green men from outer space start taking over the joint. Then you'll be looking for anyone with even remotely human features.

I really can't get behind his saying that we need to omit slavery, the KKK and racism from the record, as if it didn't exist. Sometimes you need to stare the beast in the eye and see all the ugliness. One NEEDS to see why it must never be repeated. Put the 500 pound gorilla in a box and it becomes a museum piece, to be studied, but not admired in this case.

Reading your posts, you should be the one in the video. All due respect to Lupe, your thoughts are more coherent.

Hey thanks for your feedback on "Chuck Norris...."! Much appreciated... As far as the Lupe vid, I can't peep it as it's not available anymore, but I'm kinda interested in hearing what he has to say. I have some mixed feelings about dude. Anywhere else I can check the video out?

If you set up your MOG-O-MATIC program, it should automatically detect the songs on you computer. When you play them on your media player, MOG automatically sends the info to your page, but it takes a little while to update sometimes.
