"Little Brother" makes "These Days" worthwhile...

I've been spending a lot of time working through Vince Gill's 4 CD set, "These Days", released about a month back. I've admittedly not listened to a lot of him in the past; mainly because I'm not really much of a Country fan - I don't actively dislike Country music - I just have more of a "take it or leave it" relationship with it. But there is no getting around the fact that Mr. Gill is a fantastic musician with a nose for brilliant arrangements and when a musician of his caliber feels like he has something to say and he wants to take 4 CDs to say it, well, I'm all for sitting back and having a listen. The first three discs are pretty ho-hum. Discs 1 & 2 are mainly straightforward blues tinged ballads with a couple of very good tunes, but nothing that is going to break into getting regular play on my iPod. The third disc is straight up country and while I recognize and applaud his musicianship, it really just isn't for me. But the fourth disc ("Little Brother") alone is worth the price of the entire 4 disc set: billed as Bluegrass, it just flat out rocks. It is eerily reminiscent of the "Cozmic Country" of the early Grateful Dead or New Riders of the Purple Sage (or a more contemporary influence: JJ Cale - who is featured on the final song of the disc "Almost Home".). Hell, maybe Cozmic Country was just Electric Bluegrass all along - in any event, it is well worth sitting down and listening to - Just a fabulous effort.I've posted a few songs from "Little Brother" on "my Vox home page":http://blanchardhome.vox.com/ if you'd like to have a listen.HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!!
