WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

a change of taste

Posted over 3 years ago
for the past few weeks ive been into a lot of mellow music that chills me out (i.e. thelonious monk, portishead, animal collective, massive attack), but i woke up this morning wanting to hear some heavier repititious rocking: stoner rock, if you like. so i put on lightning bolt's hypermagic mountain, and let me say that this album is sick. the ever-intensifying guitar riffs and frantic drumming just mesh so well together. on a side note i was reading somewhere that one of the members of this band does illustrations for music and has made a whole cartoon/movie about something (cant remember?), so if any of you know anything about if please let me know...ill be looking around anyways though. anyways, great album for any stoners out there who like this kind of stuff.secondly, boris' pink album is fucking amazing. i got this album a while ago but havent listened to it on my laptop much cause it would probably annihilate my speakers, so therefore ive been listening to it on these old, tower speakers (originally for a record player). fuck! these guys can rock. i just read pitchfork's live review of them also, and it just makes me want to go see these guys even more than i already do...the introduction with the rolling papers was pretty amusing too.thirdly im trying to find more bands like these guys: lightning bolt, boris, butthole surfers, etc. im open to any recommendations, so start shooting..the cover art for lightning bolt's hypermagic mountainthis is pretty sick

  1. Skuter30 says Try some Probot, if you haven't already. I recommend this group to everyone! Revolting Cocks are another. (Old school stoner rock) I was just thinking about them the other day. "BEERS! STEERS AND QUEERS! YAAA!" Cool artwork BTW.

  3. Kate says Have you checked out the related bands Black Mountain and Pink Mountain? They are so rad it hurts. Also the Blood on the Wall song "Stoner Jam" fits your bill.

  4. mullytron says +1 on Probot. It may be my favorite thing Dave Grohl has done. Try Fu Manchu, the obvious stoner rock elder statesmen. High on Fire is excellent also. If you can live without lyrics, Karma to Burn is one of my all-time fave simple rock bands. Their drummer rules. If you really like it slow, murky, and painful, try Kyuss or Sleep.

  5. ScheisseMinelli says black mountain = the shit. druganaut is one of my favorite songs. as for pink mountain havent checked em out, but will soon. and if they are as rad as black mt. then my head might explode. i dont know why but i have a thing for bands that have lots of related side projects, my favorite one being godspeed you! black emperor. already checked out blood on the wall too, awesomer is a sick cd, and yes stoner jam is right up my street. ive also checked out kyuss and high on fire, but have only listened to a few songs and it was a while ago so ill probably go give them a few more listens. they sounded like i could get into em, but i just wasnt digging that, musically, at the time. anyhow, thanks for all the recommendations, this will give me something to do for the next couple days since im currently unemployed (AND FUCKING LOVING IT!). you gotta stick it to the man every once in a while. :)
