the red hairs mean its good

maybe im looking in all the wrong places or maybe im just crazy, but i feel its funny how no one has mentioned anything about the relationship between drugs and music. you dont have to do drugs to know about great music, but most everyone i come across who listens to great music does some form of drug, be it natural, chemical, or prescribed. it just enhances the already awesome stimulation the brain gets from the sound. plus, most musicians (that i listen to) were doing drugs either during the performance or writing of their music, therefore it only makes sense that you could better understand the point/mood/feeling they were trying to get across while under the same state of mind as they were. for instance, earlier this year i finally saw the lips live at langerado (which was a pretty fun concert by the way, if anyone reads this and went to it please comment and tell me, you might know who i am...) and happened to take two hits of the most incredible acid and then had one of the most revealing/amazing experiences of my life. i understood their music in the first place (and yes i understand that acid can really fuck with your brain) but it all took on a new meaning in relation to my life. ive always been the shy sort of guy, not speaking until spoken to, shit ive still yet to have a girlfriend at the age of 19, but fight test and the rest of yoshimi battles the pink robots helped me realize that i cant avoid life, its going to happen whether or not i like it. erego, carpe diem. not carpe diem in the sense of go fucking discover some miracle drug or something else huge, but more of a seize the small moments of your life. dont be afraid to put yourself out there and get shot down by someone else. most of the time that happens the other person is either jealous or frustrated of the self-confidence and assurance you exude. wayne coyne and co. taught me to live the way and to love the one i feel is right, not the way or whom im told by everyone else is right. life is all about self-satisfaction through believing that youre the best person you can be.but anyways, back to the point, i just feel as though people overlook this relationship too often and also that it has gotten a bad connotation from mainstream-musician-drug-users. if you know how to handle them, they can teach you a lot about life.

  1. KebStarr says I made a post a while ago. People got angry. It's your call. I don't think I need to be intoxicated to enjoy music. I've never drank or smoked at a concert or anything. But yeah, some artists who've ODed and stuff give drugs a bad connotation in the media. They're not really that good if you get addicted. I know a lot of people experiment with them for creativity. I feel that I don't have to.

  2. ScheisseMinelli says i have friends that are the same way and i envy them and their creativity, but drugs and i have grown very close to each other.

  3. KebStarr says as long as you're not addicted and not hurting anyone or yourself, it's your choice. Though one time I did get stoned and I wrote a poem about it. It was a funny poem.

  4. Saturn9 says People listen to music when they're on drugs because (as you said) it's stimuli. Same with flashing lights, cartoons, or a back massage. Now consider the usage of alcohol in music, something that's been around since the invention of fermentation many thousands of years ago. Shamanistic usage of psychoactives, music, and spirituality? That too. Usage of drugs during music is almost a chicken vs. egg debate.

  5. ivylander says What's that old line about the three reasons for smoking dope: it makes food taste better, music sound better and sex feel better? Fair enough. I certainly have nothing against the odd bowl, but once you get deeper than that it becomes a very slippery slope. I no longer buy the line about drugs making you "more creative." They may make you feel more creative, but that's not the same thing as being it. At best, I think, they drive musicians to challenge certain of their own mental and psychological boundaries, and the breaking of those barriers can create some exciting energy. And listening to that happen when you're high can create an incredible feeling. But it's a very transitory moment, and it doesn't make you any freer or wiser in the long run. Trust me on this. I don't want to sound like a Reagan-era drug czar or anything, but I've come to think it's just as foolish to mythologize drugs and impute magical powers to them as it is to "just say no."

  6. lemontwist says Agreed on the transitory part. And afterwards, is it ultimately really worth it?

  9. ScheisseMinelli says its that, but for me its more of a noticing the minute things you dont really notice at the time (i.e. the timing of a certain noise or the dynamics of the music) stuff you never really notice unless your brain is completely focused or relaxed

  10. abloodblackrose says well being focused and relaxed in todays world is very difficult. things you wouldn't normally notice suddenly come into the picture. it really is quite beautiful.

  11. Jess Horrible says "some artists who’ve ODed and stuff give drugs a bad connotation" problem is, these are people who started out the same as the rest of us. just be careful and you'll be ok. but please, please be careful. as a "participant" i can tell you, i've lost some friends into the void. you can learn a lot from drugs. just make sure you're always learning, not just doing it because it's cool, and you'll be ok.
