MOG MOG

WHERE MUSIC IS WORTH MORE THAN MONEY

I was just DYING for an excuse to work an LCD Soundstystem song title into a mog post! Go check out Sound of Silver by the way, its outstanding...

But I am afraid we have become way to structured with these theme days...not a criticism, just an observation...we are not acting very rock n roll...

Sometimes i like to keep it random

I am with you. I liked the theme concept when I heard about it, but it is a bit monotonous in practice. I'm actually MOGging less and less because of it. Sorry, guys, I don't mean to kill anyone's joy or anything.

Theme days?

Have I missed something?

I accidentally started the hip hop thing, because one night I was in the mood for some good hip hop...then it sort of spriraled out of control!

Yep, maybe it's time to give the themes a rest.

Hahahaha man I'm always such a late bloomer. The "Funky Friday post" I just made is only the 2nd theme day post I've ever done...and now you people are tired of it...sheesh. Can't win for losing with you all :P

ah, wotta buncha sheep. Like you can't post what you want anyway? A devious mind takes a theme day and warps it to his/her own intention. As my 12yr old says, who wants to be a sheep? Be a wolf.

I mean, some days we're just not feeling it, right?

I thought the same thing today and actually thought of you, Blair because you seem to post tons of different posts no matter what theme is on. I have also chosen a non-funk song for today but I still like to see funky moggers go crazy.

I did not know you were the father of numerous theme days. You are made to become a true dad. Invent something.....then tell your kids not to go there.

Bottom line is that it's good to know that I can count on lots of sad, happy and beautiful songs from you no matter what theme goes on in this world some call MOG.

We could do theme days almost as effectively (and at least to me much less annoyingly) by just posting a YouTube search box with 'punk' or 'funk' or whatever filled in.

Mr. Ingham has expressed my feelings as well. I wouldn't dream of passing by a cool video or MP3 because it wasn't coordinated with that day's theme. Non-funky music is just as welcome on Fridays as it is any other day of the week. Besides, I kind of suspect that theme days will eventually run out of steam, as it becomes harder and harder to find something wonderful that hasn't been posted before. But theme days emerged organically, let's let them run their course organically.

Ivy & John, speaking for me personally, it's not that I feel that I can't post something non-theme, it's just that seeing so many posts with an identical core kinda kills my MOG buzz. I feel a repetition thing going on and it bores me. No offense to anyone, it's not that you or your words bore me, it's the theme concept that does.

I haven't intentionally posted any song on its theme day... late bloomer and all to the MOG way of life. But I dig the organic ... let nature run it's course ...vibe.

Personally, I have to post what is in my head ... if it fits, great, if not, it's still worthy ... right ???

And I certainly wouldn't discriminate based on whether or not someone's MOG fit the specs. I would even hazzard a guess that most of MOGland feels similarly !!!

The first Rule of MOG CLUB ........... hey wait - there aren't any rules ... yay :)

As such, we should keep it thusly ruleless, lest the King change his mind ;)

I think it is funny that themes became out of control when funk and reggae were introduced, but I actually am with y'all, it does seem like a lot o themes. But why do so many hate funk?:) Don't fret, like Ivy said, they'll die on their own. I mean I only have 50,000 songs, how long could it last?

I'm glad I wasn't the one to say it. I mean, I know we can post whatever we want when we want, but if I have to spend another Thursday scrolling through dozens of hip-hop related posts just hoping somebody posted something I might actually care about . . .

. . . sorry, as you can tell, I'm not too big on the hip-hop! (Or punk, really, although I don't have a real problem with it. Funk is okay, but gets boring after a while).

Yeah...it was just the repetition that was boring me to death....it got really uncool REALLY fast....

Wow, how many of us were all thinking the same thing but not wanting to rain on the parade of lock-steppers? My personal problem is that most of the "themes" (Punk Rock, Hip Hop, Hair Metal, Reggae) are genres that hold little appeal to me. I enjoy Funky Friday but, other than that, the rest can be retired.

I'm still not quite sure why this is such a problem. I'm not especially enamored of most hip hop, but it doesn't actively piss me off to see the enthusiasts gather on Thursdays. So what if you have to scroll down past a few posts? We all do that anyway. Nobody's forcing anybody to read or watch or listen to anything. And it's not as if the space occupied by a particular post is preemptive - there's unlimited room in the MOG-O-Sphere. I think of theme days as opportunities for those MOGgers who have a love for a particular genre to convene and turn each other on to records that they love - which is, to my mind, the main point of MOG. If you're bored, there's plenty else here that's interesting.

Groon says:

I guess for me, it's just that I find myself MOGging less and less on those particular days, which overall is leading to less total MOGging, feeling more out of the loop, etc etc. Insert whine here.

Also, I like how unstructured things were in the past. It seems to me like once strucutre and order get enforced on anything a lot of the fun seems to get sapped out of it. I know that's not a very rational argument, and please dont' take it as one, but that's the best way I know to put it into words.

I'm not saying stop the theme days, I'm just glad to know that I'm not the only one who finds them less than stellar. I guess it would be different if there were days for my particular likes and stuff, but I don't see there being enough interest to start "krautrock Monday" or anything.

Maybe a "krautrock every-other-Monday-between 5:30 and 5:45" or something, but that's about it. :-)

Well at least we got a nice dialouge started! I am not at all offended by the presence of themes, I just think that too much structure is never a good thing...at least in a forum like this...i personally won't adhere to such things, but I am not going to be offended if anyone else does

Isn't it funny how it becomes a debate, with people accusing others of being complainers or whiners or whatever, when a lot of the people voicing this opinion just sound like they miss participating in the discussion?

When people reach out to you, and say "gee, I'd like to talk with you more" is it a normal emotional response to call them whiners? Oh wait, let me go ask my boyfriend.

Yep, he says it's normal.

(I kid. But I thought the ladies might appreciate that.)

And Cody, I really don't think it has anything to do with what you mentioned and everything to do with ADD. :)

I dunno, Kristiana, it felt to me as if the message wasn't so much "we feel left out of the discussion" as "I don't like punk/funk/hip hop/reggae/polka and it ticks me off to have so many posts that don't interest me, so stop it." I for one am happy to be taken out of my musical comfort zone - the death tape that funkybarb made for me, for instance, is all stuff I would never have thought to listen to on my own, but I am genuinely digging a lot of it. I don't think of the non-theme-day adherents as whiners. But I do feel that those of us who love particular genres shouldn't be scolded because we decide to throw a little party once a week. Nobody is being excluded from that party because they're not cool or knowledgable enough. Besides, as I said before, I think the theme-day thing is going to run its course soon enough, sorta like those Meez avatars (which annoyed me a fair bit, but hey, if others were having fun with it, who was I to kill their buzz?).

All the points you have made are good ones, Ivy, too true. Believe me when I say that I did not have you in mind when I wrote that. You are the bestest!

Maybe you're right about the message. I know I would never be excluded from a party of yours, sir. But I have been known to be excluded from some.

My only worry was that people would stop sharing the stories, how the music is interwoven with their story. And some people do, and some people do it well. Or that new moggers would hesitate to share something else, thinking they should stick with the theme, since that's what everyone else seems to be doing.

Ah, don't mind me, it's late and I'm real tired.
