MUSIC SIGNPOSTS ON THE WEB'S LONELY ROAD

(167)

Brooklyn based indie rock sisters Sierra and Bianca Casady have come back from seperate side projects to record a follow up to 2005's stellar 'Noah's Ark', to be released on Touch And Go records on April 10th. The sound that CocoRosie concoct is like a collage of several different styles, with elements of classical, dreamy pop, nu-folk, and even hip hop. On paper it is a musical trainwreck, but on record it is at times gorgeous and haunting, and never boring.

The sisters Casady prove they are capable of covering all aspects of the emotional spectrum as well. From the silly, playful 'Japan' to the beautiful and emotional 'Miracle' the disc shifts gears, often suddenly, but never losing steam. CocoRosie even call on famous friend Devendra Barnhart, who co-wrote the slightly over the top track 'Houses'.

The stand out tracks are the ethereal 'Promise' and the beautifully crafted 'Werewolf' with its multi-layered beats and perfect vocals. There are a few minutes of self-indulgence, like the take it or leave it mostly instrumental number 'Bloody Twins', but those moments are quickly erased from your mind by the overall excellence of this record. A must have for any music lover looking for something slightly left of center of most of the pop music being produced today.

wow, this is gorgeous.

i've been becoming quite sick of the "googoo gaagaa" vocal singing style that seems to be so common these days, but the juxtaposition of the two vocals styles here has a redeeming quality that i'm appreciating. and the music itself is very layered and richly textured. i really liked Noah's Ark too... can't wait to hear more of this.

Oh man...if I stopped to add up all of the money that I have spent on music I learned about on MOG...it would actually be depressing!
