MUSIC SIGNPOSTS ON THE WEB'S LONELY ROAD

Track:
(252)

I really am, and I don't want to change. Don't get my wrong...i love thrashaing guitar, slamming rhythm sections, and well placed feedback as much as the next music junkie, but at the end of the day I am a lyric guy. If you read much of what I post, you probably know that already...

I have attempted to write lyrics, and they sounded SO contrived and so cliche...so I appreciate great words more and more all the time.

Patterson Hood from the Drive By Truckers is one of my favorites...listen to 'Outfit'...he is such a great story teller.

i am a word guy too blair and i freaking love that song

i played it on a loop for weeks

if it was a cassette, it certainly would have worn out on me

but i feel it is my obligation to blow up your spot here

please forgive me, but that tune was written by jason isbell, the sweet voiced crooner in dbt, not paterson

patterson has so many great songs, but my fave is steve mcqueen off gangstabilly

you've gotta be a great lyricist to find a way to make the word Mesothelioma work in a song

here is an excerpt from that simple and funny, sweet and sorrowful, perfect tune

I really loved The Getaway back when I was eight that pussy Alec Baldwin sucked in the remake and speaking of pussy, I guess Steve got it all He fucked Faye Dunaway and he fucked Ali McGraw

Steve McQueen Steve McQueen When I was a little boy I wanted to grow up to be Steve McQueen Steve McQueen The coolest goddamn mothefucker on the silver screen

I went to see The Hunter on my first date The Hunter was the last movie Steve McQueen lived to make They took my drivers license when I was just sixteen the year Mesothelioma killed Steve McQueen

And my favorite Mike Cooley tune is Carl Perkin's Cadillac, sounds like it was written decades ago, a lovely vintage piece

<-----count me in on the lyrical bandwagon, and that song is great. The Truckers have been slowly pulling me in, pulling me in, pulling me in. . .

That really is a great song. I didn't know this one. Thanks for posting this.

Definitely a sucker for lyrics too. I'm thinking Damien Jurado when it comes to lyrics that make me forget everything else.

im definitely not a word guy. i hear the music and the patterns first, if i feel the vocal melody is doing something that i like i then begin to pay attention to the lyrics. lyrics can ruin a song very easily, but as long as they arent bad, im more concerned with what the vocal pattern is doing in general. i guess that is kind of funny coming from a song writer.

I know what you're saying. Great lyrics won't matter if the melody and arrangement is awful....but a great melody and arrangement can make it up for bad lyrics. That said I am definitely looking for the songs with great stories or songs that make me feel something.....and therefore I consider myself a lyrics-guy.

Outfit is a great song, but it is a Jason Isbell song not a Patterson Hood. Alas, Jason recently left (was pushed out of?) the band. Decoration Day is another highly recommended Jason song for DBT.

Yeah, like three people told me that already....Isbell's 'Sirens Of The Ditch' is incredible....a great record
