MOG MOG

MUSIC SIGNPOSTS ON THE WEB'S LONELY ROAD

(36)

Antony and the Johnsons are one of those polarizing bands. They are loved...or hated. And I understand arguments for both...its not for everyone. I for one fall on the LOVE side...but I am curious to see what MOG nation thinks....and please, be honest! You won't offend me in the least if you don't dig the sound...

And the Johnsons? Really? How funny is that!!! This isn't bad. I think I'd like this better if he didn't have such a vibrato on his voice, but he does have a nice voice.

I absolutely love "Hope There's Someone" a whole bunch. Like, really a lot. The rest of his stuff, ehhhh. But I haven't listened in a while. So basically, I don't love or hate it, I just let it be, man.

I can’t say that I hate them but they do nothing for me. At best, a campy imitation of Bryan Ferry. At worst, pretentious gender bending claptrap.

I'll go ahead and say hot. Why not? It's a good ol' fashioned soulful jam.

I think I've been confusing Anthony and the Johnson with someone else for awhile now...someone with a similar name.

That didn't do it for me so much, it's his voice I think.

He is definitely a favorite of mine. Love the voice, love the songs, love the arrangements. I heard his first album back in 2002 or something. Must admit that I was working my way around it. Didn't know whether to love or hate him. Don't know why. He did back-up vocals for Lou Reed on his Raven tour. Didn't know it was him until he started singing. I was amazed. When he did Candy Says I knew that me and Antony would be friends forever. As soon as I heard I Am A Bird Now I was hooked. Went back to the old album.....guess I had matured. Saw him live in Malmö, Sweden. A great show. He definitely has something unique.

When it comes to slow, quiet artists such as this, I tend toward the side of love, but with some limitations.

My dad and I were having a conversation about this a couple of days ago. We were talking about artists where we like all of their songs, but can only handle them in small doses. My dad used the example of Dean Martin. He said that he got a Dean Martin CD, and he loves all of the songs on it, but can't listen to the whole CD straight through. It's almost too much. It starts to sound alike after a while.

That's sort of how I feel about Antony and the Johnsons, Damian Rice, Beth Orton, etc. I really like their songs. A lot, even. But I'm more of an uptempo person, so unless I am using it for mood music, I can only listen to a couple of songs at a time before I have to switch it to something else. Not because I don't like it, but because it's just too much slow and quiet. Though they are good when I'm trying to work. I definitely can't listen to them while I'm walking (I have to walk about a half mile from the train to my office) or when I'm driving.

Not caught by the beginning narrative, but then the singing starts, and oh my! I love it!
