MUSIC SIGNPOSTS ON THE WEB'S LONELY ROAD

(38)

America does one thing better than ANY other country in the world. What is that you ask?

The American entertainment machine loves to pluck very attractive, marginally talented people from obscurity and place them into positions as larger than life icons...and then wait with baited breath to watch them plummet to the bottom quicker than you can say '15 minutes'.

On several forums, blogs, message boards, and the like I have seen people feeling sorry for Britney Spears. What a wasted emotion! I mean really. That girl was able to do things and go places that we mere mortals would kill to do. No matter what happens, she had opportunities afforded to her that far, FAR more talented people will never even catch a glimpse of. So for someone to squander that, and then turn around and blame ANYBODY else but themselves...no way.I am not buying that for a second. You sold your soul to make your millions of dollars...and know that check is being cashed. Don't cry for Britney Spears. Cry for the THOUSANDS of hard working musicians who are out there living out of a van and playing to 15 people in some small club in Buffalo,NY just for the love of what they do. Don't cry for Britney Spears.

Jack White says 'You can't be the pimp and the prostitute too...'

Word.

Cue the music...

Back in the heyday of the American Idol hoopla (I guess like first or second season), I remember every morning show was having their own versions of American Idol. I used to watch The Today Show everyday before work so I kind of watched their horrid version of it. I remember though, one of the promising contestants eventually got arrested in New York for masturbating in public while beg people to look or watch him do it. Vulgar as this analogy may be, it seemed about right in explaining most peoples "need" to be famous is rather more a megalomaniacal tendency to need attention - rather than receive attention because of natural talent or sheer love of performance.

Sadly, we live in a time when many are under the delusion that "given the chance" they could prove that they have enough belief in themselves that their true talent shines through. This of course negates the fact that any truly talented performer/artist has spent either their life or most of it to get as good are when you see them perform.

It's a culture of instant gratification and crushed expectations.

Well said Blair! And to add to that, forget Britney and go support your favorite local musicians, as blair says, they probably deserve your support a lot more than some pop stars do.
