Audio nostalgia...Squirrel Nut Zippers

'Those who fail to study history are doomed to repeat it'- Winston ChurchillWhy the history reference? Because I think I speak for everyone when I say we don't EVER need another swing revival. Swingers was a great movie, no doubt...butI could do without Big Bad Voodoo Daddy and most espicially bands like the Cherry Poppin Daddies.I know BBVD are legit and still doing what they do, but it was like people put swing bands together, got rich, then happily went away. There was a TON of really bad 'swing' music being churned out.But I don't lump the Squirrel Not Zippers in with that lot. I always that they were more of a roots/Americana type of sound, and WAY more talented than most of the revival acts.Enough rambling...here's a tune

  1. Pseudo Cyborg says Hot is such a fantastic album. I revisit it about every 3 months or so.

  2. contrabandwidth says Couldn't agree more. The Zipper's were fantastic. They were a pre-war New Orleans style Jazz/swing where as Big Bad Voodoo Poppin Daddy Orchestra were the War Era/Andrew Sisters/Benny Goodman type of swing. To see the Zipper's live, they really believed in the music they made, and they enjoyed it. So much good energy at one of their shows. I couldn't stand all those others, it just felt so fake, like when everyone was taking Dirty Dancing Lessons after Dirty Dancing came out (or Saturday Night Fever before that).

  3. shayna says these guys definitely got misplaced in the wrong trend. lame that their talent had to get caught up in that. at least Andrew Bird came out of it successfully! the rest of those guys have been left in the dust, tho. remember that ska revival in the late 90s as well? the best thing that came out of that was that I got to see, meet and joke around with The Specials, on a mountain in the snow. weird. but awesome.

  4. contrabandwidth says Lest we forget everyones rush to fuse every genre. It's Polka - Hop! It's Klez-Core! It's Vaud-vile! None of these existed, as far as I know, but there were plenty of genre wrapping themselves in gimmicks tied up in the notion that someone gave a fuck.
