WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Want to date a musician? Think before you answer

Posted over 2 years ago
I joke a lot about being in love with some of my favorite musicians, but in reality I don't think I could hack it. Not sure how I would deal if a song about me became a gold record. Actually, I do know how I would handle it...it wouldn't be pretty. But I do love being a third party and watch ex lovers take shots at each other through their art. Kaleef reminded me of one of my favorite rock n roll break ups today. Dave Grohl and Louise Post. Such a beautiful, talented couple...you knew that would burnout quickly! Here is K's post:http://mog.com/kaleef/blog_post/94659I will post Dave's side of the story at the bottom of this. Not to be predictable and take the guy's side, but I think Dave wins with the lyric 'I just kinda died for you...you just kinda stared at me'

  1. amber says I think the confusion I had with this post was with the work "date". Do I want to _date_ a musician? Well.....noooooo, not _date_... =o)

  2. SatisfiedMind614 says Hahaha....then you will be fine...if you can just get your husband to sign off on it

  3. amber says whoops I meant word--not work...sheesh, typos get me in trouble all the time... FYI...date does not equal work ...at least I never got paid for any of my "dates"

  4. amber says Aye, that's the rub...husbands can mess the whole groupie thing up. sigh... BTW, in Chicago you CANNOT tell my husband everything I post here! No matter how much sports talk or beer he bribes you with...

  8. Betherz247 says As much as I love certain musicians I could never date one, 9 times out of 10 they are so incredibly talented because they are completely unstable and/or crazy in one way or another, even if they don't appear to be. But that's why I love them!! From a distance

  9. SatisfiedMind614 says Goo point Beth...they are all crazy...that is what makes them brilliant though...only musicians should date musicians...they are on another level that we mere mortals won;t ever be able to grasp

  10. kat3260 says This post title sparked my interest because I _am_ dating a musician (although I rarely see him so the term "dating" isn't exactly proper). Is it possible that I've found the music man who isn't a crazy, unstable asshole? I hope so...although I have to say, there's no way I could handle the distance & constant traveling if it weren't for the love of his job. If he was a pilot or something, I doubt I'd be putting up with this hehe.

  11. SatisfiedMind614 says Hahaha....go for it Kat!! I think everyone here is drawn to musicians! I am sure they are not all crazy...but it does take a strong person to be in a relationship with one...or so I would imagine, buying concert tickets and staring are as close to dating a musician as I have ever gotten

  12. kaleef says i've dated a couple musicians in my time... surprised? one was a drummer and the other is a bassist. word of advice, go for the bassist... nope, no more musicians, lately i've been sticking to artist's although, are _they_ much better? man i need to go have a word with myself...

  13. kat3260 says Kaleef - I'm dating the bassist. Yippee :) I have no standard for comparison, though. I've dated people who played instruments (in fact, I think they ALL have) but this is the first one who actually has a band and tours. It's tough to say whether there will be a future or not, but for now, I'm enjoying it. Also, the perks are nice ;o)

  14. SatisfiedMind614 says No musicians in my history of exes...but a danceer...NOT THAT kind of dancer...she had a day job, but was in a belly dancing troupe on the side...i will forever associate this Hold Steady song with her..."She was a damn good dancer but she wasn't all that great of a girlfriend..."

  15. fairportfan says Great breakups? Ray Davies and Chrissy Hynde - before the breakup, she came to a Kinks gig and Dave and Mick spit on her; Ray went to a Pretenders gig and the band members beat him up. After the breakup, she dedicated a Kinks song to Ray - the same one she recorded that led to them getting married - *Stop Your Sobbing*. David and Angela Bowie - she had a job as a club DJ here in Atlanta for a while in the '80s; her son was going to school here; some of the stories she told - did you know that David Bowie once exorcised his swimming pool because he was convinced there was an evil spirit in it? And: Q: What do you call a guitar player without a girlfriend?
    A: Homeless

    And:
Q: How do you get a musician to stop ringing your doorbell?
    A: Pay for the pizza.

  16. k8girl says Hotel Chelsea no. 2 - Leonard Cohen about Janis Joplin, just found that out recently (thanks YouTube!) As for dating a musicican, there is just something about that acoustic guitar that drives me wild.... ;)

  17. SatisfiedMind614 says Wow...Cohen and Joplin? Off to listen to that right now...i had you pegged for an acoustic guitar girl from the start Kate!!

  18. MsRosalita says Hmmm - tough one. I'm sworn of these 'creative types' after very recent experiences. I'm naturally drawn to music but people connected are just so flighty and argh… And I'm too romantic so it never works. Having said that, my music partner is pretty damned solid and has a great relationship with his wife… but he's a film maker primarily.. Nah that's rubbish - he's just a solid, dependable type who rocks. I think if I'd met and fallen in love with Jeff Buckley back in the day and he then went off and drowned on us, I'd be in a mental institution. BIG SHOES to fill. I haven't made one bit of sense, have I? More coffee, I thinketh.

  19. Jonh Ingham says DOWNSIDE: How long can you tak about ME for? At a charity do I sat next to a famous star at the dinner table. I ran out of talking about her in less than 30 minutes. She, on the other hand.... UPSIDE: What must it feel like to be Marilyn Wilson or Pegi Young and know you're the muse for songs of such beauty and tenderness?
