WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Show etiquette....or the lack there of

Posted over 2 years ago
So as part of my 'farewell tour' of Columbus venues I have been buying two tickets to all of these shows and giving one to a good friend, just my way of saying thanks and goodbye. Well, last night I went to see Tim Easton at Little Brothers, my all time favorite spot in town and I took my friend who shall remain nameless...but her initials are TESS!I got SO upset last night...and i am laid back...probably laid back to a fault, it takes a lot to really upset me. But tread on my favorite music or my favorite musicians, and you push my buttons. For the second half of his set, this is a small place and we were RIGHT up front, she spends TEXT messaging with a friend. SO disrespectful! I have so much respect for people who choose to make a living making music. There are so many easier ways to get through life, but these folks are doing what they love. Especially people like Tim Easton, who are not exactly getting rich by playing to half empty bars on Tuesday nights.I ask you, how hard would it be to just walk back to the bar area to have your all important text conversation. That would not have offended me at all, even though I bought her ticket...playing with your cell phone why a guy his playing his heart out on stage is SO NOT COOL.OK...thanks for reading and letting me vent...feeling better already and moving on...and of course I have a song for the occasion

  1. jameson says It's like that time a couple of years ago I spent a lot of money to take my girl to an Ani Difranco show in Providence. Lupo's is a smallish venue, capable of maybe 1500. Show was sold out or nearly so. Jam packed, wall to wall. The entire show SUCKED because her FANS chose to talk to one another the entire set. And not quietly. The people that were there on that particular night were trying very hard to hear each other over Ani's own beautiful music. Now Ani has a policy of playing a little quieter, I have a feeling it's in respect to the damage that loud music does to people's ears. I'm not saying she was playing quietly, she was loud enough. But when she, or any artist, has to COMPETE with her own audience for attention, there's something wrong. Especially since all of those girls that were there paid 30 bucks apiece to, I dunno, talk to their friends..... I had a terrible time at an otherwise great show.

Both of those scenarios are simply awful and yet I see the same thing here at pretty much every show. Why do people bother to go see someone perform and then not pay attention and groove to the music?

  6. Lizziegreeneyes says I've said it before & I will say it til the day I leave this world: *I paid good money for this show, a show I want to see & LISTEN to - as did you - I don't want to know what Cheryl did when Jimbo ran over her foot with his Nova, so, if you gotta talk - there's the bar, there's the entrance way, there's the bathroom & there's the door !! Now get the fug away from me or I will be forced to jujitsu your ass outta the joint.* The worst part - one would think that the older the crowd the less likely they will be to talk, get drunk & stupid, have their cell phone playing Toto's Africa... but in my experience the kids are far better behaved than some _sista, go getcha roots done did asap cuz you lookin like you was ridden hard & put away wet_. Drunk & pushy guys - they really rub me the wrong way too... can't tell you ow many times I've had some tool behind me yelling the song in 3 keys above & below where he should be (at the same time) then push through to get in front of me - needless to say, he's always 9' 27" & makes it impossible for me to see. Seriously, if you are that desperate to talk or text or get wasted - why not do it from the comfort of your OWN HOME. Why kill everyone's mood with pathetically unacceptable behavior. Again - I am *_SO GLAD_* I am not +_strongly opinionated_+, *&* that I don't know jujitsu - cuz if I did -there would be a *+trail of blood+* following me from each show where I find disrespect.
