WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

My back pages

In every music junkie's life there are a handful of 'sea change' albums. You know those records that once you hear it, your musical tastes are forever altered. Maybe not totally changed, but your tastes have definitely expanded. The Jayhawks 'Tomorrow The Green Grass' was one of these for me. This record opened up my ears for that whole 'no depression' alt country sound. Without this disc I may have never gone on to find bands like Wilco, Uncle Tupelo, and Lucero...it was like NOTHING else that i was listening to at the time...and 12yrs later I still love it.Feel free to share one of yours if you are so inclined...enjoy the tune

  3. Dale says No, not Mew; without this album, I wouldn't have touched the Mew with a ten-foot pole. Check the link on the comment above!

  5. 82times says Grandaddy's _Under the Western Freeway_ was one of those for me. I learend things could be scraggly, well-crafted, _and_ epic at the same time. Awesome album. (iTunes link) (eMusic link)

  6. SatisfiedMind614 says Your Grandaddy experience reminds me of another one...Pavement's 'Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain'...the weird poetry as lyrics, the strange guitars...that record was a total watershed musical moment for me

  7. 82times says Ooh yes, Pavement--you should be sure to check out _American Water_ by the Silver Jews if you haven't already. Stephen Malkmus and the Silver Jews guy were homies...I think he may even play on this record. (iTunes link) (eMusic link) Cool weird little Nirvana (I think?) lego icon, btw.

  9. tybees says ??Illinois?? by Sufjan seriously changed my life...I was so oblivious to all the great indie/underground music until I discovered that record, and it opened me up to a whole 'nother world. I doubt I would be on MOG if I'd never heard it.

  11. contrabandwidth says Yeah this album will always have a special hold on me, and with a song like "Blue", I don't know how this album wasn't enormous. Truly a beautiful album. Even though it to led me to other albums like Wilco's "Summer Teeth". I don't know that anything will touch this album. A Masterpiece. If I could make a top ten ( which I don't know if I really could) this would be in there along with Tom Waits' "Frank's Wild Years".
